PRINCETON, N.J. – Five members of the Lehigh women's track and field team earned All-East honors this weekend after competing at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J. Freshman Maura Henderson earned the All-East distinction for her fifth place showing in the 3K with her 10:08.02 performance, her fastest time of the outdoor season. Senior Ann O'Connell, along with sophomores Hanna Brosky, Hannah Leskow and sophomore Laura Barnes each earned All-East accolades on Sunday as members of the 4x800 meter relay team.
The 4x800 prelims took place on Saturday with O'Connell, Brosky, Leskow and freshman Stephanie Hayes taking fifth place in 9:05.16, qualifying them for Sunday's finals. On Sunday, Barnes joined O'Connell, Brosky and Leskow in the finals as the quartet improved their time to 9:03.87, taking home fourth place. The All-East recognition is the first such honor for the four members of the 4x800 relay team.
For Henderson, the first-year Mountain Hawk capped a fantastic freshman season where she finished third in the 3,000m steeplechase, fifth in the 3K and fourth as a member of the 4x800 relay team at last weekend's Patriot League Championships.
"Tactically, Maura ran very smart," head coach Matt Utesch said. "It's great for a freshman to be tactically smart that way.
"The 4x800 was our fastest of the year, despite the (weather) conditions being probably the worst of the season," Utesch said. "I'm very pleased with how we came away."
Over the course of the weekend, Marissa Karl (4:38.91) and Barnes ran in the prelims of the 1500m run. Katie Hatler and Noreen Byrne both competed in the hurdles prelims, with Hatler (14.89) in the 100h and Byrne setting a season and career-high best of 1:02.55 in the 400m hurdles.
Over in the field events, junior Courtney Avery took third place with her 1.70 meter high jump, finishing ahead of senior teammate Gabrielle Wardle (1.67m), who tied for sixth.
Sophomore Amanda Youngblood kicked things off on Friday in the discus, where she placed third in her flight, seventh of 28 overall with a 43.74 meter toss, which is the third longest toss of her career. Melody Walthers also saw action in the javelin toss (38.30m).
Avery (high jump) and Wardle (javelin) are both in position to qualify for the First Round of the NCAA Championships. Avery currently sits tied for 19th and Wardle is 39th in the East Region in their respective events, where the top 48 will qualify. The First Round will take place on May 26-28 in Jacksonville, Florida.
