BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a spring season which has featured tremendous growth, the Lehigh women's rowing team heads to the Patriot League Championships on Friday. Racing is set for Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. The day begins at 8 a.m. with the Varsity Eight and continues with the Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four.
Â
The championships feature morning heats between 8 and 9 a.m. followed by the finals. Petite finals begin at 11:30 a.m. with the Varsity Four while the grand finals start at noon.
Â
Friday is the culmination of the season for the Mountain Hawks and what they've been preparing for since the beginning of the fall.
Â
"The women have had a tremendous year, bringing home a couple medals from fall and spring and achieving new levels of success that the team hasn't seen in almost a decade," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley.
Â
That new level of success happened a few weeks ago when the Varsity Eight defeated Holy Cross for the first time since 2007. The team's success this spring has increased confidence heading into the biggest race of the year.
Â
"I think the confidence they now have in their boats is a testament to their preparation," said Conley. "They have worked hard on being prepared physically, mentally and emotionally to take on whatever the league wants to throw at them."
Â
One challenge is competing in the middle of final exams, but it's something the team has prepared for and their academics won't miss a beat.
Â
"We have been taking one day at a time, but we have been preparing for this since we arrived in September," said Conley. "It's not easy to think nine months in advance, but this group did a good job in making sure they were ready. The professors have really been great in helping find solutions for our student-athletes."
Â
Last season, the Mountain Hawks finished seventh at the league championships, ahead of Colgate and Loyola and just nine points behind Georgetown in fifth place. Holy Cross, a team Lehigh's Varsity Eight defeated this season, finished in third overall. The Mountain Hawks look to continue closing the gap year after year.
Â
"Our goal is to make the grand finals," said Conley. "We talk about having to be in it to win it, so we need to beat some fast crews to be there and once we're there, we know anything can happen."
