BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's rowing team wraps up its season at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta this weekend. The largest collegiate regatta in the United States is held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Racing begins on Friday.
Â
The men's squad was last in action two weekends ago in a scrimmage vs. La Salle. Two weekends prior, the Mountain Hawks competed in the Kerr Cup, highlighted by the Men's Varsity Four winning a Gold Medal.
Â
"The men have been showing constant improvement throughout the season and I think they're finding some good speed that they are excited to show on the Schuylkill one last time this year," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It will be a fun and exciting regatta."
Â
One challenge for the Mountain Hawks is competing in the middle of final exams. Despite the challenge, they are still able to compete, while their academic responsibilities won't miss a beat.
Â
"We have been taking one day at a time, but we have been preparing for this since we arrived in September," said Conley. "It's not easy to think nine months in advance, but this group did a good job in making sure they were ready. The men have two days of racing which required them to work with their professors a bit more. The professors have really been great in helping find solutions so that Lehigh is represented at the largest collegiate rowing race in the world."
Â
At last season's Dad Vails, every boat was in contention to advance. This year's team is excited to see what it can do at its culminating race after working hard all year to be at their best come May.
Â
"Our men's four is looking really solid at racing," said Conley. "I am excited to see what they can do. I've also been impressed with the guys that are developing in the eight. In the course of two weeks, they have found a lot of speed. It will be interesting to see them take on some big-named teams and see how they race."
Â
Conley is excited to see the team step up, beginning on Friday.
"We want to develop our team and get ourselves into racing on Saturday," said Conley. "Dad Vails is a tough place to race with so many teams coming and a lot of distractions, but I believe these guys have the ability to put themselves in the racing on Saturday. I think they believe it too, and that is more than half the battle."
