BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Morning rains gave way to sunshine as the Lehigh football held its annual Brown and White spring game Saturday at Goodman Stadium. On a day where the Mountain Hawks did not tackle, the defense still carried the day, pressuring the offense into eight would-be "sacks." Under the modified scoring system the defense (brown) defeated the offense (white) 33-19 after the 90 minute controlled scrimmage.
Â
"The defense obviously won," admitted rising senior quarterback Nick Shafnisky. "They were flying around and getting to the quarterback which is their mentality. They want to create turnovers and get sacks and they did a really good job of that this spring."
Â
Rising junior defensive lineman Tyler Cavenas led the defense with three sacks, while senior Evan Kauffman, now back at linebacker, recorded two.
Â
"We had a lot of energy out there as a defense," Kauffman said. "That's one thing we've been focusing on. Just swarming to the ball no matter how far you are and running to the ball and bringing intensity and energy to the defensive side of the ball."

(4/23/2016) Football Spring Game, 4/23/16
All four Lehigh quarterbacks saw action with sophomore Brad Mayes leading the way by completing 6-of-8 passes for 56 yards. Senior Nick Shafnisky was just 2-of-5 for 14 yards and also rushed three times for 44 yards and scored the only touchdown of the day for the offense running untouched for 32 yards on a scramble late in the scrimmage.
Â
Sophomore Nick Thevanayagam carried a team-high seven times for 24 yards while junior Troy Pelletier was the top receiver with five catches for 46 yards. Sophomore Conner Bianchini added three catches for 25 yards.
Â
Junior quarterback Matt Timochenko went 3-of-10 for 33 yards while classmate Brendan Craven finished 2-of-11 for 16 yards.
Â
"Offensively, we had a bit of a depleted line," Shafnisky said. "It was awesome though to see some of the freshmen get that game-time experience."
Â
Mayes and Timochenko both led Lehigh on short drives that resulted in field goals. Coincidentally, sophomore Ed Mish converted both of his in-game field goal attempts, both from 33 yards and was successful on several other kicks during breaks in the action.
Â
The defense carried the day from the start as three of the first six plays of the game resulted in sacks by Cavenas, Evan Kauffman and sophomore Harrison Kauffman.
Â
"We've improved so much," Evan Kauffman said. "If you look at our first practice of spring ball to this game we were getting after the quarterback every other play. We've improved through these 14 practices this spring.
Â
There were no turnovers on the day as Lehigh quarterbacks threw 34 passes without an interception and five ball carriers rushed 19 times without fumbling.
Â
Rising senior running back Mackenzie Crawford was awarded the Jim Gum Scholarship Award, which is presented in memory of former Lehigh football player James S. Gum '84. Crawford, a vital cog in pass protection for the Mountain Hawks, rushed twice for five yards on Saturday.
Â
Saturday's Brown and White game marked the 14th of Lehigh's 15 allotted spring practices. The Mountain Hawks will complete their spring practice segment on Monday in their last full squad meeting before preseason camp begins in August.
