Mountain Hawks head to Boston for first Patriot League road series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of their last six games overall, the Lehigh softball team heads to Boston for its first Patriot League road series as the Mountain Hawks and Boston University will play three games beginning Saturday on the BU Softball Field. Lehigh and BU are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Due to the threat of inclement weather, first pitch for game one of Saturday's doubleheader has been moved up to 10 a.m. Sunday's single game is currently scheduled for a noon start.
The Mountain Hawks extended their winning streak to six with a doubleheader sweep at Penn on Wednesday. Lehigh broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the opener 4-0 in eight innings and built a 6-0 lead in the nightcap before prevailing 6-3 to improve to 21-7 overall on the season.
Freshman Ashley Quidolit went 4-for-4 in the nightcap, while senior Alexis Watanabe totaled four hits in the two games. Senior Morgan Decker had a home run and two doubles on Wednesday, surpassing the 150 RBI mark for her career. Decker enters this weekend's series with 199 career hits.
In the pitcher's circle, junior Christine Campbell, the reigning Patriot League Pitcher of the Week threw an eight-inning complete-game three-hitter in game one against Penn, while freshman Emily Sorem earned the win in game two.
Last weekend, Lehigh opened Patriot League play with a three-game sweep of rival Lafayette at Leadership Park. Campbell earned the win in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader while Sorem rebounded from a rocky start Saturday to win the series finale 4-1 on Sunday. Senior Jessica Calvini drove in four runs against the Leopards on the way to being named Patriot League Player of the Week. Sophomore Nicole Yozzo led Lehigh with six hits in its first three league games, while classmate Carolyn Wright had three RBIs in game two against the Leopards, including the game-winning single in the ninth inning.
Boston University enters the weekend at 11-16 overall. The Terriers have lost four straight games, dropping three close contests at Army West Point in their league opener before dropping a 6-5, eight inning decision to Boston College on Wednesday.
Infielder Brittany Younan leads BU with a .367 batting average. Alex Heinen has been the top run producer with two home runs and 21 RBIs.
Lauren Hynes has thrown the lion's share of innings in the circle, going 8-7 with a 2.50 ERA in 100.2 innings of work. Melanie Russell and Makinna Akers have each thrown just under 30 innings this season.
Boston University is in just its third season in the Patriot League. The Terriers lead the all-time series versus Lehigh 5-4 but the Mountain Hawks own a 4-2 edge in Patriot League regular season play over the last two years. This weekend's series matches the last two Patriot League Tournament champions. BU took 2-of-3 from Lehigh in the Mountain Hawks' last visit to Boston in 2014. Lehigh swept three games at Kaufman Field last season.
Following the BU series, Lehigh will visit Fordham for a single game on Tuesday before returning home to host Colgate for three Patriot League games April 9-10.
