Lehigh returns home for big game vs. No. 14/16 Navy Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following two straight road games, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team returns home for a big Saturday afternoon showdown against No. 14/16 Navy. Opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcast locally on Service Electric 2 Sports, and online through the Patriot League Network. The matchup features two teams tied for second place in the Patriot League standings with identical 3-1 league marks, and they're both 5-2 overall. In their most recent contest, the Mountain Hawks used a strong fourth quarter at Lafayette to pull away from the Leopards.
Saturday's game is Lehigh's first Summit Series game as tickets are just five dollars for the general public while Lehigh students, faculty and staff are admitted free with their Lehigh ID. Saturday features a Lehigh Lacrosse doubleheader with the women set to host American at 12 p.m. before the men host Navy at 3 p.m. Lehigh Lacrosse (men's and women's) will be hosting a food drive Saturday as non-perishable food items will be collected at the Ulrich Sports Complex, right through the main entrance by the concession stand. All donations will go to New Bethany Ministries, a local food pantry and soup kitchen that feeds and shelters local individuals and families in need.
Lehigh enters Saturday's matchup having won four of its last five games. After a 13-10 loss at Army West Point, the Mountain Hawks bounced back with an 11-6 win at Lafayette last Saturday. A tight game saw the Leopards score the game's first two goals, but a 4-0 Lehigh run helped the Mountain Hawks surge ahead. The teams went back and forth until the Mountain Hawks ended the game with four straight goals and five of the final six to clinch their sixth straight win over Lafayette and 15th win in their last 16 tries against the Leopards.
Seniors Reid Weber and Billy Oppenheimer, along with freshman Tristan Rai, all finished with identical stat lines of three goals and one assist. The three goals marked a career high for Oppenheimer and his first-career hat trick. Senior Alex Eaton dished three assists. Junior Casey McAdam scored a big man-down goal, and was solid at the faceoff X, while junior Matt Raposo scored a goal for the seventh straight game. Senior Tripp Telesco led the defense with three groundballs and four caused turnovers while freshman goaltender Chris Kiernan impressed with 11 saves in his first-career start. Ten of those saves came over the final three quarters, which included stopping seven-of-nine in the second half. After Lafayette took an early 2-0 lead, the Mountain Hawks held the Leopards scoreless for the next 20:46. Lehigh later held Lafayette scoreless for a span of 19:23 from the end of the second quarter, through the entire third quarter until early in the fourth.
Lehigh stands near the top in the nation in several categories, including two players at No. 1. Rai scored on all three of his shots at Lafayette, increasing his shooting percentage to 0.667 for the season, which is tops nationally. With Telesco's four caused turnovers, he is up to 19 on the season, which also leads the country. Meanwhile, senior Casey Eidenshink scooped a groundball on Saturday to reach exactly 100 GBs in his career.
Entering the weekend, Army West Point stands in first place in the Patriot League standings at 3-0. Lehigh and Navy are each tied for second at 3-1 while Boston University and Loyola are 2-1. The Mountain Hawks are entering a crucial part of their schedule. Following Saturday's game, Lehigh hosts No. 12/13 Stony Brook next Tuesday before heading to Boston next weekend. The Mountain Hawks then host preseason Patriot League favorite the following Saturday.
Navy enters Saturday's matchup with an identical 5-2 overall record and 3-1 league mark as Lehigh. The Mids' two losses have come in double overtime, against No. 5 Johns Hopkins and at Boston University. Following that BU loss, the Midshipmen responded with three straight wins, at Bucknell (13-6), against No. 15 Loyola (10-9) and vs. Lafayette (11-4). The game against Lafayette was played this Tuesday as a makeup game for a previously rescheduled contest. Patrick Keena leads the team in assists (17) and points (26). He's followed by Jack Ray with 18 points, including a team-high 14 goals. T.J. Hanzsche has posted 15 points (11 goals, four assists), Casey Rees owns 14 points (13 goals, one assist) and Greyson Torain has 13 points (nine goals, four assists). Matt Rees has led the defense, owning a team-high 36 groundballs along with 13 caused turnovers. Chris Fennell owns 15 groundballs and 14 caused turnovers. Brady Dove has been stellar at the faceoff X, winning 57.6 percent (68-of-116) on the season. John Connors has started all seven games, owning a 6.72 GAA and .500 save percentage. As a team, Navy's defense has allowed just 6.86 goals per game (fourth in the nation) while scoring 9.86 per contest.
Lehigh's 14-10 win over Navy in 2010 to snap a 26-game losing streak to the Midshipmen, and sparked a five-game Mountain Hawk win streak. Navy ended Lehigh's run with a 13-12 win last season. Seven of the last nine meetings have been at Lehigh, with the Mountain Hawks winning four of them. Included was a 10-6 win in the 2014 Patriot League Quarterfinals, which was the last time Lehigh and Navy played in Bethlehem. Lehigh's first-ever win came in 1913 by a 4-3 final. The first-ever meeting was in 1910, a 4-2 Navy victory.
