
Sorem named Rookie of the Week as Lehigh readies for Wednesday visit to Saint Joseph's

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh pitcher Emily Sorem has been named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, it was announced Monday. Sorem went 3-1 in four appearances, with a pair of complete-game shutouts as Lehigh went 5-2 in the final seven games of its spring break trip to Florida.
Sorem allowed eight runs in 27 innings of work last week with 23 strikeouts. Her week began with a four-hit shutout in Lehigh's 4-0 blanking of Hartford on Tuesday. After earning a victory against Maine on Wednesday, Sorem came back on Friday with a two-hitter in the Mountain Hawks' 4-0 win over Quinnipiac on Friday. The Oregon native also pitched well in a loss to Big Ten member Northwestern, allowing just two runs on four hits. For the week, Sorem pitched to a 2.07 earned run average, while opposing hitters batted just .200 against her.
For the season, Sorem leads Lehigh with a 2.71 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 62 innings of work. She is 4-3 and has thrown the only two complete-game shutouts for the Mountain Hawks so far in 2016.
The Mountain Hawks (15-6) will travel to Merion Station, Pa. for a non-league doubleheader with Saint Joseph's Wednesday with game one beginning at 3 p.m.
Lehigh closed out spring break with wins in three of its four contests at the USF Spring Break Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. The Mountain Hawks beat Rutgers, Quinnipiac and Marist with the only loss coming against Northwestern, by a 2-0, just the second time this season Lehigh was held scoreless.
The 7-1 win over Marist on Saturday was the 700th career victory for head coach Fran Troyan. Lehigh went 8-3 on its spring break trip, including a 2-1 mark versus Big Ten opponents, with wins over Purdue and Rutgers.
Through the team's first 21 games this season, the Mountain Hawks' offense has been anchored by senior infielder Morgan Decker, who ranks sixth nationally with a .500 batting average and leads the nation averaging 0.57 doubles per game. In 21 games, Decker has 12 doubles and leads Lehigh with four home runs and 22 RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Katie Schultz has also come on strong with a .411 batting average and 12 RBIs. Junior Vicky Lattanzio has helped out Decker in the run-production department. Lattanzio has 21 RBIs, including eight in seven games last week, to go along with a .370 average.
From the pitcher's circle Sorem and junior Christine Campbell have shared the starting duties, with Campbell posting an 8-3 record and 3.79 ERA.
Saint Joseph's has won three straight games and five of its last six, with wins over Delaware, Seton Hall, San Diego State and Utah Valley to improve to 9-8 on the season. Junior catcher Kaylyn Zierke has started all 17 games for the Hawks and has notched a team-high four home runs and .404 batting average. Zierke will be joined by senior infielder Brandi Harkness in the core of the St. Joe's lineup with a .370 batting average a team-high 18 RBI's.
Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series with Lehigh 22-14 but the Mountain Hawks have won the last four meetings, including a 5-1 win at Kaufman Field in 2014.
Following the Saint Joseph's doubleheader, Lehigh will open up its home schedule and Patriot League play when the Mountain Hawks welcome rival Lafayette to Leadership Park to a three-game series with a doubleheader set for noon on Saturday and a single game set for noon Sunday.
