Mountain Hawks split Wednesday doubleheader at Saint Joseph's

3/23/2016 7:54:00 PM | Softball

MERION STATION, Pa. – In its first two games this season in the Northeast, the Lehigh softball team split a non-league doubleheader with Saint Joseph's Wednesday at the SJU Softball Field. The Mountain Hawks out-hit the Hawks 12-10 in the opener but three Lehigh errors allowed Saint Joseph's to rally for a 9-6 victory. Lehigh raced to a 5-0 lead in game two and earned a split after a 7-3 victory in a game that was shortened to six innings due to darkness.

Senior Jessica Calvini and sophomore Nicole Yozzo each had three hits in the twinbill, for the Mountain Hawks, who enter the start of Patriot League play at 16-7.

Sophomore Lindsay Phillips went 2-for-2 with three RBIs in game two, with her two-out, two-RBI single staking Lehigh to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. A single by freshman Ashley Quidolit and an error on a ball hit by senior Alexis Watanabe loaded the bases. SJU starter Madison Clarke then issued back-to-back walks to senior Morgan Decker and junior Vicky Lattanzio before departing with Lehigh up 5-0.

The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on Hannah Dionne's two-run home run and added a third run on Sarah Yoos' fifth-inning RBI single.

Lehigh added two more runs in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Calvini and Phillips and a RBI from Watanabe. Junior Christine Campbell worked around two singles in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game for the Mountain Hawks.

Campbell worked in-and-out of trouble all game, allowing three runs (two earned) on 11 hits in six innings with a walk and a strikeout as she improves to 9-3.

Both teams committed two errors in game two, with Lehigh finishing with an uncharacteristic five over the two games.

Wednesday's first game saw Lehigh take an early 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded RBI single by sophomore Katie Schultz, which followed a pair of walks and a Lattanzio single.

Saint Joseph's (10-9) went in front on a Kaylyn Zierke RBI single in the first inning and a two-run double by Taryn Grober in the third.

Lehigh went back in front in the top of the fourth when sophomore Carolyn Wright was hit by a pitch with one out and then moved to third on a double by Calvini. Junior Ashely Cole followed with a pinch-hit three-run home run to left, her third of the year, to put the Mountain Hawks in front 4-3.

The lead was short lived, however, as Saint Joseph's capitalized on a pair of Lehigh errors to score four runs and take a 7-4 lead after four innings. Amanda Kulp's RBI fielder's choice bunt put the Hawks in front 5-4 and SJU added two more runs in the frame.

The Mountain Hawks pulled a run back in the fifth when Wright singled home Schultz, but Saint Joseph's extended its lead when Yoos hit a two-run home run off of Campbell in the bottom of the sixth.

Lehigh scored a run in the seventh when senior Carissa Zito drew a two-out walk and then came around to score on Calvini's second double of the day, but Anna Lauterbach closed out the game to earn her fifth save of the season.

Freshman Emily Sorem threw the first five innings for Lehigh and took the loss allowing seven runs (four earned) on eight hits while walking two and striking out two as she falls to 7-4. Ashley Ventura earned the win for Saint Joseph's before Lauterbach recorded the final six outs.

All three of Yozzo's hits came in the opener, while Grober and Yoos each drove in three for SJU.

The Mountain Hawks will open up their home schedule and Patriot League play when rival Lafayette visits Leadership Park for three games this weekend. Lehigh and Lafayette will play a doubleheader on Saturday with game one set for a noon start. The series finale, a single game, will begin at noon on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
