BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a successful winter, the Lehigh rowing team hits the water this Saturday for the beginning of the spring season as the Mountain Hawks compete against Patriot League foe Loyola on the Schuylkill River. Racing begins at 12:30 p.m.
Â
Lehigh will begin its spring break by facing the Greyhounds and will wrap it up next weekend when the women's squad faces Temple and the men compete against Delaware on the Schuylkill River.
Â
"It's definitely a different way to start our season, as most teams wait until after their spring break to start," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Because of the academic calendar change, it has opened up this great opportunity."
Â
The Mountain Hawks have been hard at work this winter to prepare for their spring season, a winter that's featured tremendous growth and camaraderie.
Â
"This team has really taken shape over the winter," said Conley. "We have a smaller group, but they truly took personal responsibility for their own fitness and each other. We also came back to campus early and learned a lot about what we need to do to be successful, and we're utilizing resources we hadn't before."
Â
The importance of the winter season can't be overlooked.
Â
"I'm really excited about how much this group has developed over the course of this year," said Conley. "It's hard to know where you are in the fall; we were definitely not where we wanted to be. However, winter is where our season can be won or lost and this team stepped up. I'm excited about whatever lies ahead because of the effort they put in."
Â
The improvement has come in many areas, but especially with many intangibles.Â
"Each athlete has really bonded to the other and because of their daily effort, bond and focus, our culture is now at a place where we are building to become the championship team we want to be," said Conley. "We just have to continue the path we are setting."
Â
Conley would like the Mountain Hawks to continue setting the legacy of the Lehigh Rowing program.
"This year has featured a huge change in the desires of the student-athletes," said Conley. "They've been more vocal and backing up what they want. I'd like to see that focalization continue being put into action."
Â
The spring schedule begins Saturday with Loyola, an invaluable opportunity to compete against a Patriot League squad.
"Starting with a league opponent will really help us set the stage," said Conley. "In the past, we only saw Patriot League opponents in big regattas and sometimes, even then didn't get to race them depending on progression and results."
Â
The spring schedule features many big regattas, including the Murphy Cup, River Cup and Dad Vail Regatta. The Mountain Hawks enter the spring with specific goals they'd like to accomplish, whether it's a dual matchup or a regatta with multiple teams.
"Our first goal is to race like we practice," said Conley. "We want to be successful by racing our way and nothing different from practice. We also have a goal of the first race being the only thing we focus on. We can't make the finals of any regatta unless we can race the first race well. Then, we will take care of the next race when it's time."
Following Saturday's racing, the Mountain Hawks will return to the Schuylkill River next Saturday (Mar. 19) when the women's squad faces Temple and the men row against Delaware.
