BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a weekend off, No. 6 Lehigh returns to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Saturday to kick off a three-match homestand as the Mountain Hawks host the American Eagles. Lehigh has won nine straight duals, including a 25-13 win at Cornell in its last action on January 23. The Mountain Hawks won six bouts, scoring bonus points in four to beat the Big Red for the first time since 2011 and the first time in Ithaca since 2004. A win over American would clinch an undefeated EIWA dual season for the Mountain Hawks, who would officially qualify for the NWCA National Championships Dual Series the weekend of February 20-21.
Â
Saturday's dual will be preceded by a high school match pitting The Delbarton School from New Jersey against Wyoming Seminary from Pennsylvania. Doors to Leeman-Turner Arena will open at 11:30 a.m. with the high school match beginning at noon. One ticket is good for both the high school match and the Lehigh-American match.
Â
Last time out, Lehigh posted its first win over Cornell since 2011, beating the 15th-ranked Big Red 25-13 in Ithaca, N.Y. The Mountain Hawks won six bouts, scoring bonus points in four weight classes, while taking advantage of Cornell being without both of its top-ranked grapplers. A major decision by Darian Cruz at 125 sparked a 16-0 Lehigh spurt to open the dual. Nathaniel Brown posted his seventh technical fall win of the season while Max Wessell closed out the dual with a major decision.
Â
The NCAA released the first of four Coaches' Panel rankings for the 2015-16 season back on January 21. The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. A panel of coaches ranked the top 33 in each weight class with the Mountain Hawks well represented. Lehigh has wrestlers ranked in the top 33 in nine of ten weight classes, with the exception being 174. Senior Nathaniel Brown is the highest-rated Mountain Hawk, coming in at No. 2 at 184.
Â
American brings a 4-5 dual record into this weekend's action. The Eagles will visit Binghamton on Friday prior to their visit to Lehigh on Saturday. American won its first four duals but has dropped its last five including home losses against Duke and Columbia last weekend.
Â
On the tournament circuit, the Eagles finished 12th at the Cliff Keen Invitational and 18th at the Midlands Championships.
Â
American has two wrestlers ranked by InterMat, while a total of five Eagles appear in the first NCAA Coaches Panel rankings. American is led by 125-pounder David Terao, who is ranked eighth in both polls, while John Boyle is ranked ninth by the coaches and 13th by InterMat at 157. Esteban Gomez-Rivera, Mitchell Wightman and Jeric Kasunic appear in the top 33 of the Coaches Panel rankings at 133, 165 and 197, respectively. Teague Moore is in his fifth season as American's head coach.
Â
Lehigh and American will meet for the sixth time with the Mountain Hawks capturing the first five duals by an average score of 28.6-14.4. This will be the second dual in the series to be wrestled at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall, five years to the day of the previous meeting. These teams first met as part of the Sheridan Duals in 2003.
Â
Saturday's Lehigh-American dual gets underway at 3 p.m., following the Delbarton-Wyoming Seminary match at noon. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online at LehighTickets.com.
Â
Lehigh will close out its home schedule with two duals next weekend. The Mountain Hawks will welcome No. 1 Penn State to Stabler Arena Friday in the 104th meeting between the Pennsylvania rivals. As of Thursday morning, more than 5,500 tickets have been sold for the match, with a limited number of tickets still available. Â On Sunday, Lehigh will host Bloomsburg inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall in what will be both Senior Day and the home finale.
