BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding its longest winning streak since the 2012-13 season, the Lehigh men's basketball will search for its eighth straight victory on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Colgate for a showdown with the Raiders. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Standing alone in second place in the league standings, Lehigh needs one win over its last two regular season games to clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks need to win both of their remaining games, and receive some help from out-of-town scores, to earn the top seed.
Lehigh defeated Lafayette last time out, 73-61 to earn its seventh straight win and move to 11-5 in league play and within one game of .500 at 13-14 overall. After a tough 0-7 start to the season, the Mountain Hawks are 13-7 over their last 20 games. Lehigh is also one game behind first-place Bucknell, who stands 12-4 in the Patriot League. To earn the regular season championship, Lehigh needs to go 2-0 this week and have the Bison go 0-2. The Mountain Hawks could also catch Bucknell by going 2-0, the Bison going 1-1 and having Colgate tie Boston University in the standings (the Raiders are currently one game before the Terriers). If that happens, Lehigh would tie Bucknell, but earn the No. 1 seed due to the tiebreaker.
On Sunday, the Mountain Hawks came out a bit slowly against the Leopards, falling behind 6-2 early. However, a jumper from sophomore Kahron Ross evened the score at 11, junior Tim Kempton gave Lehigh a 13-11 lead 27 seconds later and Lehigh wouldn't trail the rest of the way. Ross enjoyed a stellar game, posting his fifth-career double-double and first of the season behind 11 points and a season-high tying 12 assists. Ross turned the ball over just once, playing nearly the entire 40 minutes at point guard. With his 12 assists, he moved from seventh to fifth in school history, now owning 159 assists. Mackey McKnight is the single-season leader with 192 assists in 2013-14 while Ross' 175 helpers as a freshman stand third in school history. Meanwhile, Kempton tallied his fourth double-double in his last five games on Sunday, posting 16 points and 15 rebounds to tie a career-high, knocking down 6-of-8 from the floor.
Freshman Kyle Leufroy also scored 13 points, hitting both of his three-pointers, while senior Jesse Chuku posted 10 points and eight boards on his Senior Day. Classmates Devon Carter and Justin Goldsborough each scored seven points in strong efforts while John Ross Glover also made the start, his second of the season. Junior Austin Price scored nine points to pull within 30 points of 1,000 in his career. Lafayette pulled within six at 41-35 early in the second half, but the Mountain Hawks extended their lead back to 14, on the way to their first regular season sweep of the Leopards since the 2011-12 season.
Colgate is coming off a thrilling Senior Day win over Loyola on Sunday which featured a half-court shot from Austin Tillotson to give the Raiders a 93-90 overtime win.
Colgate is enjoying a strong Patriot League season, owning a 9-7 mark in league play. The Raiders have won two of their last three games and three of their last five, most recently earning a 93-90 overtime win over Loyola on Sunday behind a half-court shot from Austin Tillotson. Colgate is an impressive 8-3 at home this season compared to 5-11 on the road. Tillotson leads the Raiders with 14.9 points per game, along with 5.2 assists per contest. Jordan Swopshire and Tom Rivard each average 10.6 points per game while Malcolm Regisford, who has been out the past several games due to injury, leads the team in rebounding (6.1 per game). Colgate is third in the Patriot League in three-point field goal percentage (37.2).
Lehigh snapped a three-game losing streak against Colgate to pull within 51-37 in the all-time series. Prior to this year's victory, the Raiders won the regular season finale in 2013-14 by a 74-57 final before taking both meetings last season, 68-61 and 61-55. Lehigh has still won seven of the last 11 games overall, including four straight from 2012 to 2013. The first-ever meeting between the two sides was in 1909-10, a 25-24 Colgate win. The next game didn't come until 1959-60. Lehigh's first victory was in 1961-62 by a 72-71 final.
Following Wednesday's game, the Mountain Hawks wrap up the regular season when they travel to Army West Point on Saturday to face the Black Knights. Opening tipoff is set for 12 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
