TROY, N.Y. – Six of Lehigh's 17 entrants went 3-0 to win their respective pools as the Mountain Hawks enjoyed a successful outing Sunday at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic. Overall, Lehigh went 35-15 across the day-long event. The Mountain Hawks' six pool winners included seniors Randy Cruz (141) and Doug Vollaro (285), junior Darian Cruz (125), sophomore Ryan Preisch (174) and freshmen Kent Lane (157) and Christian Colucci (285).

"I thought the team wrestled really well overall," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "We just wrestled hard and are getting a little better each week. We still have a lot to work on, but we're wrestling hard and that be the difference between being great and good."

Randy Cruz delivered one of the more impressive wins of the day, knocking off Kevin Jack of North Carolina State in a battle of returning All-Americans in the 141A bracket. After getting ridden out in the second period and reversed in the third, Cruz trailed 2-1 late but scored a takedown to go in front 3-2. Riding time advantage for Jack sent the match to overtime. Following a scoreless sudden victory period, Cruz slapped on a cradle in the first half of the tiebreaker and turned Jack for a four point near fall that became the final margin in a 7-3 victory.

"We saw him do it Friday night," Santoro said of Cruz looking for his offense. "He's trying to be more offensive. If his offense continues to get better he'll be in the hunt come March."

In his round robin pool, Cruz went 2-0 with a technical fall and a decision.

Darian Cruz won the 125A bracket with a pair of one point victories sandwiched around a second period pin of Minnesota's Skyler Petry. In the final round Cruz used a strong ride to gain riding time advantage and hold off Ohio State's Jose Rodriguez 2-1.

Lane took first place in the 157D bracket, going 3-0 in the four-man round robin. He won his first bout 5-3 over Lock Haven's Kyle Hammond and after a win by forfeit, picked up a first period fall over West Virginia's Dayton Garrett.

Preisch had a strong day, picking up bonus points in his first two victories before a strong 11-5 decision over highly-touted freshman Nick Reenan of North Carolina State to take the 174B bracket.

Both of Lehigh's heavyweights won their pools. Vollaro posted three wins by decision to claim the B bracket, scoring a third period takedown to beat Oklahoma's Ross Larson 4-2 in the final match.

Colucci won the C bracket opening with a major decision before finishing up with a pair of wins by decision.

Four Mountain Hawks wrestled to second place in their pools. Senior Laike Gardner posted bonus point wins over ranked opponents in his first two bouts in the 149A bracket. Gardner majored North Carolina State's Sam Speno 11-3 and then posted a dominant 22-4 technical fall over Oklahoma's Davion Jefferies. In the finals, Gardner lost a tight 3-1 bout with Ohio State's Micah Jordan on a late third period takedown.

"Laike is wrestling really well," Santoro noted. "(Micah) Jordan's really good. It was a great match. They were getting after it pretty hard. We knew it could be a one takedown match, and it was. Overall Laike transitioned really well today. It's something he's worked on and it's really starting to come to fruition."

Junior Jon Mele took second in the 149C bracket, picking up an opening round win by major decision.

In the A bracket at 157, freshman Jordan Kutler opened with two impressive wins but in his final bout was unable to overcome a first period takedown by Oklahoma's DaWaylon Barnes who held on for a 3-2 win.

Freshman Chase Gallik had an eventful first two matches at 165C, downing Buffalo's Tyler Rill 11-9 in sudden victory and then falling behind North Carolina State's Brian Hamann before rallying for a third period pin. Gallik dropped his final bout to Ohio State's Cody Burcher.

"We lost some close ones in the finals and we do need to make some adjustments," Santoro said. "We can get to our offense a little earlier. We were hitting them in third periods but sometimes we got down big. Sometimes we came back and sometimes we lost close. We need to get more pressure on early in matches."

At 133, sophomore Scott Parker won his opening bout by major decision before defaulting out to rest a minor injury. He finished fourth in the 133A bracket.

Junior Dean Somers was part of a five-man 133C bracket and finished in third place with a 2-2 record.

Freshman Ryan Pomrinca placed sixth in the 141A bracket, falling to Jack and Ohio State freshman Ke-Shawn Hayes before dropping a sudden victory battle against Tony D'Angelo of West Virginia.

Lehigh's two entries in the 165A pool, sophomore Gordon Wolf and freshman Cole Walter, took fourth and fifth respectively. Both wrestlers benefitted from forfeit wins and dropped close decisions in their other two bouts.

At 184 freshman Andrew Price made his season debut with a 2-1 showing and third place finish in the B bracket, while senior Ben Haas went 2-1 to take third at 197A.

"We needed an event like this," Santoro said. "We face some great competition early. We're seeing a lot of really good wrestlers in the first half of the year. The goal is for this competition to make us better and our guys seem to be having fun when they're out there. That's the main goal. The more fun you have, the more you earn and the harder you wrestle."

The Mountain Hawks will return to the road next weekend when they visit western Pennsylvania to face No. 22 Pittsburgh Friday at 7 p.m. and Edinboro Saturday at 3 p.m.
