WINDSOR, N.J. - The Lehigh rowing team finished up a successful fall schedule on Saturday with a busy day at the Frostbite Regatta on the Cooper River. A strong all-around effort included four crews who finished their heats in second place.
Â
"I was incredibly proud of the effort we put forth today," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "There was strong competition at today's regatta and we showed we can hang with some of the best competition we'll see all year. From top to bottom, we saw great races from the freshmen, great races from the upper end too, and in between. When you have our crews competing with other strong crews this time of year, it's a great sign for the future."
Â
The Women's Freshmen Four began the day on a strong note, finishing second with a time of 8:15.500. The Men's College Four placed second (7:04.000), as did the Women's Freshmen Eight (7:47.200) and the Men's Freshmen Eight (6:23.800).
Â
The Men's J.V. Eight hung tough against strong competition as well (Drexel, Columbia and Temple), finishing with a time of 6:55.400.
Â
"They had the toughest competition in their race and the effort they put in was outstanding," said Conley. "To be able to put together a boat randomly and compete, that was pretty impressive."
Â
In the end, the day featured plenty of racing and opportunities to get better.
Â
"Our mindset was getting ourselves used to sitting on the starting line for 2,000 meters," said Conley. "We were putting lineups out there to get down the course as many times as we could. Some people raced two or three times on the day, which will only benefit them later in the year."
Â
The Mountain Hawks wrapped up their fall schedule on Saturday, a fall which included a lot of progress. Both of Lehigh's boats finished in the top half of its Head of the Charles race to earn a spot in next year's prestigious regatta, while the Mountain Hawks also enjoyed success at Navy Day.
Â
"I think this was our most successful fall in recent years," said Conley. "I'm really excited and hopeful for this coming spring. A lot will be determined by how we attack winter training, but we've definitely started off on the right foot this fall."
