LOWELL, Mass. - UMass-Lowell scored just two minutes into the game and the Lehigh field hockey team could never recover as the Mountain Hawks fell to the Riverhawks, 7-1 on Sunday afternoon. Senior Gabby Tofig scored her fourth goal of the season, which have all come in the last seven games. Lehigh fired 11 of the game's final 16 shots, but it wasn't enough.
Â
"We were forced to make a lot of adjustments very quickly in this game because we weren't performing at the level we needed to in order to win," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We had several people move into positions they aren't normally asked to play to try and get the momentum swung back in our favor. There were some people who reacted well and were a nice spark off the bench. Two of those people were Emma Coppock and Becca Inzer."
Â
The River Hawks quickly took a 1-0 lead, turning the game's first shot into the first goal, exactly two minutes into the game. The teams went on to trade penalty corners, but it was UMass-Lowell who would add three more first-half tallies. The River Hawks took a 2-0 lead at the 20:31 mark off a penalty corner, made it 3-0 less than a minute later and took a four-goal advantage with less than three minutes remaining in the half.
Â
Lehigh wouldn't back down and despite UMass-Lowell opening a 6-0 lead just over five minutes into the second half, the Mountain Hawks would outshoot the River Hawks 11-5 the rest of the way. Included were numerous strong scoring chances. In the 52nd minute, Tofig had a pair of deflections from in close. The first was saved, but she converted the second off a feed from freshman Amanda Boyer, to pull Lehigh within 6-1 at the 51:53 mark.
Â
A quick transition led to UMass-Lowell's second goal, but Lehigh again responded by peppering new goalkeeper Kelsey Federico to the tune of four shots on goal over the final 13 minutes, but she made all four stops as the River Hawks wrapped up the 7-1 victory.
Â
Final shots were 18-14 in favor of UMass-Lowell while the River Hawks held a 9-5 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Katie Morris came in to relieve freshman Paige Innarella and made four saves. Eva Berkhout and Federico each made four stops for UMass-Lowell.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Friday (Oct. 28) when they travel to archrival Lafayette for a big Patriot League showdown. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. With a win, Lehigh could potentially clinch its first league tournament berth since 2011.
Â
"I'm happy to have two weeks to prepare for Lafayette because we know this is a game that can impact our season greatly," said Dallmeyer. "We have a lot of lessons that were learned this weekend, which we need to be disciplined in fixing. We need to reset, get back on the field Tuesday and focus on adjustments that need to be made heading into next Friday."
