BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its first dual action of the new year, No. 10 Lehigh kicks off a stretch of five consecutive duals against EIWA opponents when the Mountain Hawks welcome Navy to Leeman-Turner Arena on Saturday in the annual Sheridan Dual before making the short trip to Philadelphia to battle Penn on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks enter the weekend having won their last five duals to improve to 7-1 on the season. Lehigh's last dual was a convincing 30-7 win at then-No. 8 Oklahoma on December 20.
Â
The Mountain Hawks ushered in 2016 with an impressive third place finish at the Southern Scuffle, Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Lehigh sent a total of 16 wrestlers to the Southern Scuffle with eight men placing in the top eight in their respective weight classes and four others finishing one win shy of placing. Senior Nathaniel Brown led the way with a second place finish at 184. The Mountain Hawks had three wrestlers place in the top eight at 157 as freshman Ian Brown claimed third place after a medical forfeit by junior Mitch Minotti, who finished fourth. Sophomore Drew Longo was Lehigh's third place winner at 157, as he finished eighth. Also placing for the Mountain Hawks were freshman Ryan Preisch (fourth at 165), sophomore Darian Cruz (fifth at 125) and seniors Max Wessell (fifth at 285) and John Bolich (sixth at 197). Fifteen of the 16 Lehigh wrestlers to compete at the Southern Scuffle won at least one bout and 14 of the 16 won at least two.
Â
Three of Lehigh's eight place winners at the Southern Scuffle came from the 157-pound weight class. Junior Mitch Minotti and freshman Ian Brown both made the semifinals and were slated to meet in the third place match before Minotti medically forfeited. Minotti went 4-1 as the No. 4 seed while the unseeded Brown went 5-1 with four wins over ranked opponents. Sophomore Drew Longo took eighth at the weight class, winning three straight bouts Saturday morning to reach the podium.
Â
While Lehigh sent 16 wrestlers to the Southern Scuffle, four Mountain Hawks competed at the 53rd Ken Kraft Midlands Championship, Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill. Senior Mason Beckman went 3-3 to place eighth at 133, becoming a three-time Midlands place winner in the process. Sophomore Scott Parker and freshmen Jordan Kutler and Cole Walter competed unattached with all three men winning at least one bout.
Â
Lehigh wrestlers enjoyed a strong fall semester in the classroom as well. Twenty-five of the 42 wrestlers on the Mountain Hawks' roster earned a 3.0 GPA or better in the fall and 20 of the 42 posted a 3.20 or better. As a team, Lehigh posted a 3.03 GPA. Freshman Chase Gallik led the way with a 3.95 GPA in Engineering, while deferred freshman Gordon Wolf was right behind with a 3.94 in business.
Â
Navy brings an unblemished dual record into Saturday's match but the Mids have only wrestled one Division I opponent and one dual since November 1, an 18-16 win at Princeton on December 11. The Midshipmen have been busy on the tournament scene and like Lehigh, Navy spent last weekend at the Southern Scuffle where Mat Miller finished third at 184. Miller is one of just two Mids ranked by InterMat (No. 15) but is not listed among Navy's probable starters. EIWA Champion Jadean Bernstein is ranked 17th at 174. Twelve of the 15 wrestlers listed as probable starters are freshman or sophomores. Joel Sharratt is in his second season as Navy's head coach.
Â
Surprisingly, Penn will wrestle its first dual meet of the 2015-16 season when Lehigh visits the Palestra on Sunday. The Quakers competed at two open tournaments in the first semester and placed third out of 12 teams when they hosted the Keystone Classic on Nov. 22. Last week, Penn finished tenth at the Southern Scuffle with Casey Kent placing third at 174 and Lorenzo Thomas finishing fourth at 184. Kent and Thomas are two of the three ranked Penn wrestlers with 149-pounder C.J. Cobb being the other. Lehigh went 3-0 versus Penn at the Southern Scuffle with Mitch Minotti beating May Bethea 2-0, Drew Longo downing Brooks Martino 9-5 and Nathaniel Brown winning a 5-3 decision over Thomas. Alex Tirapelle is in his second season as Penn's head coach.
Â
Navy is Lehigh's second-most wrestled opponent behind Penn State. These teams will meet for the 96th time with Lehigh having won the last four duals to take the lead in the all-time series for the first time. Lehigh and Penn will meet for the 55th time. They have met in each of the last 20 seasons after not having wrestled between 1956 and 1996. Pat Santoro is 6-1 versus both Navy and Penn.
Â
Saturday's Lehigh-Navy match will begin at 2 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during normal business hours.
