BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team held off a late Lafayette rally Wednesday evening in Stabler Arena as the Mountain Hawks captured an 82-74 victory over the rival Leopards. Lafayette erased a large Lehigh lead to pull even at 65 with under seven minutes to play, but a three-pointer from junior Kayla Burton broke the tie and put the Mountain Hawks ahead for good. The win marks Lehigh's third-straight victory as the Mountain Hawks move to 5-3 in league play and 12-7 overall. The Leopards fall to 2-6 in league action and 4-14 overall.

"Lafayette is a talented and well-coaches team and any win over Lafayette is a good win," said head coach Sue Troyan. "Our kids came in and executed the offensive and defensive game plan very well and pushed the tempo in the first half. I give Lafayette a lot of credit for the run they made at the end, but I thought our kids really executed well tonight."

Junior Lexi Martins led Lehigh with a career-high 27 points behind a 9-for-17 showing from the field and 8-for-10 clip from the free throw line. Martins also contributed 15 rebounds to record her 15th double-double of the season. Senior Amina Affini followed with 14 points thanks to a 4-for-4 effort from three-point range, while classmate Elizabeth Sharlow followed with 10 points. Burton dished a team-best six assists.

Five Leopards scored in double-figures, led by Ashley Lutz with 16 points.

The Mountain Hawks drained a season-best 11 three-pointers in the victory, with eight different players draining a trey. Lehigh finished the game shooting 42.9 percent (27-for-63) from the field, 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from downtown and 81.0 percent (17-for-21) from the free throw line. Lafayette shot 49.2 percent (30-for-61) from the field and 56.3 percent (9-for-16) from three-point range, but went just 5-for-15 (33.3 percent) from the charity stripe. Lehigh held a 39-33 rebound advantage.

A conventional three-point play from Martins started the scoring less than a minute into the game. Lutz put four points on the board for the Leopards, but three-pointers from Affini and freshman Hailey Pascoe and another Martins three-point play gave the Mountain Hawks a 12-4 lead with 5:07 to play in the first quarter. The Leopards were within five at 14-9 a minute later, but Lehigh closed the term on an 11-5 run thanks to four points from both Martins and Kinek as the Mountain Hawks carried a 25-14 advantage into the second quarter.

The Leopards opened the second term on a 9-3 run to trim the Lehigh lead to 28-23 with 6:52 left on the first-half clock. Back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Quinci Mann and Sharlow then sparked a 19-5 Mountain Hawk streak that took 6:12 off the clock and gave Lehigh a dominant 47-28 lead. Martins contributed six points while sophomore Taylor Campbell added five during the run as Lehigh went 8-for-13 from the floor in the time frame. Martins also notched her 15th double-double of the season less than two minutes into the second quarter. A Lafayette three-pointer ended the half, but the Mountain Hawks carried a 47-31 lead into the locker room as Lehigh closed out its highest scoring first half of the season.

Lehigh shot 45.2 percent (19-for-42) from the field and 42.9 percent (6-for-14) from three-point range in the first half. The Mountain Hawks controlled a dominant 27-16 rebound advantage and scored 13 points off five Lafayette turnovers.

The Leopards scored the first two points of the second half before a pair of Martins free throws were followed by eight straight points from Affini that ran Lehigh's advantage to 57-33 with 6:54 left on the third-quarter clock. Lafayette then spent the rest of the quarter on a 22-6 run as the Leopards shot 9-for-10 from the field during the time frame and trimmed Lehigh's lead down to 63-55 heading into the final ten minutes of play.

Lafayette converted its first four attempts of the final quarter to string together a 10-2 run that tied the score at 65 with 6:56 to play. A three-pointer from Burton finally stopped the Lafayette streak at 5:58 before Affini drained another clutch trey a minute and a half later as the Mountain Hawks jumped ahead 71-65 with 4:25 left in the game. The Leopards tossed in a free throw, but Lehigh followed with the next five minutes to take a 76-66 lead with just over two minutes on the clock. Lafayette was back within six at 76-70 at the one minute mark, but was then forced to foul as Lehigh went a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch en route to an 82-74 win.

The Mountain Hawks return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when Lehigh hosts Boston University on Play 4Kay day inside Stabler Arena.
