BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The top two programs in the EIWA meet Saturday at the Friedman Wrestling Center as No. 6 Lehigh closes out its three-dual road swing at No. 15 Cornell. The Mountain Hawks will put their eight dual win streak on the line against the nine-time defending EIWA champions. Last weekend, Lehigh claimed a dominant 40-6 win at Franklin & Marshall, scoring bonus points in all eight victories including a school-record six technical falls. The Mountain Hawks have moved up to No. 6 in the latest dual meet rankings, Lehigh's highest ranking since the start of the 2011-12 season.
Â
Cornell comes in at 3-3 overall after home wins over Harvard and Brown last weekend. The Big Red lineup features a pair of No. 1-ranked wrestlers in Nahshon Garrett and Gabe Dean.
Â
All eight of Lehigh's victories in last week's 40-6 win at Franklin & Marshall, including a school dual meet-record six technical falls. The Mountain Hawks also had one pin, from freshman Ian Brown, and a major decision win from freshman Cortlandt Schuyler. The previous record for technical falls in a dual meet was five, set against North Carolina in the first round of the 2004 Virginia Duals. The last time Lehigh posted eight bonus wins in a dual was Nov. 23, 2008 when the Mountain Hawks posted eight (including a forfeit) in a 41-3 win over Princeton. When Lehigh won at F&M in December 2000, the Brown and White had eight bonus wins plus one forfeit. The last time Lehigh had eight bonus wins in a dual with no forfeits was against Bucknell in the 1998-99 season opener, a 37-6 Mountain Hawk win.
Â
Nathaniel Brown moved up to 184 following his sophomore season and the move paid off for the Lewisburg native, who reached the NCAA finals and earned his first All-America medal last season. Brown finished his junior season at 29-6 and also posted the first six wins by fall of his Lehigh career. Brown is now a three-time NCAA qualifier and is ranked in the top six in the polls following an 13-2 start to his senior campaign. He owns an 80-21 career record. Of his 13 wins this season, Brown has two falls and six technical falls. Brown will likely face Cornell's Gabe Dean for the sixth time in the last two seasons. Dean has won the previous five meetings including this year's Southern Scuffle finals and last year's EIWA and NCAA finals.
Â
While Lehigh and Cornell will wrestle their annual dual on Saturday, several Mountain Hawk probables have already wrestled Big Red opposition this season. Cortlandt Schuyler wrestled three different 141-pounders at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open, pinning Dylan Realbuto in 1:11 and losing decisions to Mark Grey (4-2) and Will Koll (8-1). Drew Longo split two matches with Joey Galasso at Binghamton, winning 7-2 and losing 7-5 in sudden victory. Elliot Riddick lost 1-0 to Brian Realbuto in the Bearcat Open semifinals. At the Nittany Lion Open, Ian Brown pinned Taylor Simaz twice at 157, on the way to a seventh place finish. Ryan Preisch defeated Duke Pickett 5-0 in the consolation semifinals at the Southern Scuffle, while Gabe Dean beat Nathaniel Brown 8-2 in the Southern Scuffle finals.
Â
The nine-time defending EIWA champion Cornell Big Red come in with a 3-3 dual record. Last weekend, Cornell swept duals against Ivy League rivals Harvard (31-14) and Brown (30-13). The Big Red also own a win over Drexel, while their losses have come against top 15 programs Nebraska, Rutgers and Missouri. Cornell has also been busy on the tournament circuit, winning the New York State Intercollegiate Tournament, finishing second at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and fourth at the Southern Scuffle, six points behind Lehigh.
Â
The Big Red's probable lineup features four wrestlers ranked by InterMat and three freshmen. Cornell boasts a pair of top-ranked grapplers in Nahshon Garrett, who has moved up to 133 and defending NCAA champion Gabe Dean at 184. Rob Koll is in his 22nd season as Cornell's head coach.
Â
Cornell is Lehigh's third most-often wrestled opponent behind Penn State and Navy. The Big Red have won the last five duals in the series, including two dual wins over the Mountain Hawks last season. Lehigh is 1-5-1 against Cornell under Pat Santoro. The Mountain Hawks are 0-3-1 in their last four trips to Ithaca. Lehigh's last win in Ithaca came on criteria, 17-16 in 2004, the last time these teams wrestled at the Friedman Wrestling Center.
Â
Saturday's dual gets underway at 6:30 p.m. from Cornell's Friedman Wrestling Center. Cornell will offer streaming video on the subscription-based Ivy League Digital Network. Audio coverage will be available on ESPN Radio of the Lehigh Valley (1230/1320/1160) and ESPNLV.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.
Â
Lehigh will be off from competition next weekend and will return to action on Saturday February 6 when the Mountain Hawks welcome American to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for a 3 p.m. dual. The Mountain Hawks are 5-0 all-time against the Eagles and will be hosting American at Grace Hall for just the second time.
