BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks continue their three match road trip with a visit to Franklin and Marshall Saturday at Mayser Center. Lehigh extended its dual win streak to seven with victories over EIWA rivals Navy and Penn last weekend to improve to 9-1 on the dual season. The victories helped vault the Mountain Hawks back up to No. 8 in the national rankings. Lehigh wrestlers won 16 of 20 bouts last weekend in the 34-3 home win over the Mids and the 27-10 road triumph against the Quakers. Sophomore Darian Cruz and freshman Ryan Preisch led the way as they both went 2-0 with two bonus wins.
Â
In a dual that was much closer than the final score, Lehigh held off Penn's upset bid with a hard-fought 27-10 win at the Palestra last time out. Five bouts were decided by three points or less, with Lehigh claiming wins from Randy Cruz, Mitch Minotti and Nathaniel Brown, whose 4-2 decision over Lorenzo Thomas at 184 clinched the dual for the Brown and White. A technical fall from Darian Cruz and a major decision by Ryan Preisch helped give Lehigh an eight point cushion with two bouts remaining.
Â
Wrestling without three starters, Lehigh still managed an impressive 34-3 win over Navy in its return to Grace Hall on January 9. The Mountain Hawks won nine bouts with the lone loss coming by a single point. Freshmen Cortlandt Schuyler and Ian Brown were victorious in their Grace Hall dual debuts, with Schuyler moving up to 149 to beat Corey Wilding 10-9 and Brown downing Jonathan Carrera 10-3 at 157. Freshman Ryan Preisch and senior Max Wessell contributed pins to Lehigh's effort.
Â
A trip to Lancaster to wrestle Franklin and Marshall marks an opportunity for freshman Cortlandt Schuyler to wrestle in his hometown. Schuyler was a three-time state qualifier for Manheim Township High School, where he is the school's all-time wins leader. His father, former Lehigh All-American and EIWA Champion Pete Schuyler '83 coached the Diplomats from 1998-2010, winning 72 duals in 12 seasons.
Â
Franklin and Marshall stands at 3-7 on the dual season with an 0-3 mark against EIWA opponents. Last weekend the Diplomats went 1-2 at the Pitt Duals, beating Davidson 32-6 and falling to Columbia and the host Pitt Panthers. F&M's other two dual wins this season came against Centenary and Oswego State.
Â
The Diplomats' top wrestler is senior Rick Durso, a 2014 All-American who deferred his eligibility last season. Durso finished eighth at 141 two years ago and is currently ranked 15th. He also won an EIWA title in 2013. In late December, the Diplomats hosted the F&M Open and had three place winners. Heavyweight Antonio Pelusi finished third while Paddy Quinlan and Anthony Mancini finished fourth at 141 and 184, respectively. Pelusi and Mancini are both listed as probable starters for Saturday's match. Mike Rogers is in his sixth season as F&M's head coach.
Â
Lehigh is visiting Lancaster for a dual meet for the first time since December 2000. The Mountain Hawks have won eight straight duals against the Diplomats since F&M posted its only win in the series in 1987. Franklin & Marshall did host the 2008 EIWA Championships, which was the last time Lehigh competed in the Mayser Center. Pat Santoro is 2-0 versus F&M.
Â
Saturday's dual gets underway at 2 p.m. from Mayser Center. Audio coverage will be available on WLVR-FM (91.3) and WLVR.org beginning at 11:45 p.m. Franklin and Marshall will offer video coverage on its web site through Stretch Internet.
