JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lehigh track and field senior Ryan Mahalsky and sophomore Courtney Avery wrapped up competition at the NCAA East Regional Saturday. Avery just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship in the high jump with her 13th-place finish. Mahalsky, who already qualified for the championship race in the 10,000 meter run, finished his busy weekend with a 27th-place in the 5,000 meter race.
Avery finished 13th in the high jump with a school-record tying leap of 1.79 meters. She missed a trip to the NCAA Championship by just one spot as the top 12 finishers qualify to compete in Eugene, Ore. The personal-best tying leap caps off another strong season for the sophomore who won both the indoor and outdoor Patriot League high jump championship and the ECAC outdoor title.
"Courtney made the same bar that the top 12 made, but just lost it on misses," said head coach Matt Utesch. "This experience will only help drive her towards better things. She's only half way through her career and already has a storied career, so her future is certainly bright."
Mahalsky wrapped up his busy weekend with a 27th place finish in the 5,000 meter race. He crossed the finish line in a time of 14:31.07. Mahalsky's strong performance comes two days after he punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 meter race Thursday.
"Ryan had an awesome double," said Utesch. "He just didn't quite have enough left in his legs to qualify for both. We're super excited to be going to the next round with him and can't wait to see how far he can go."
Mahalsky will finish off the Lehigh track and field season June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore. when he competes in the 10,000 meter race.
