BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will wrap up the regular season with a three-game series on the road against Colgate. The Mountain Hawks have already secured the Patriot League regular season title so the series has no impact on their postseason seeding. With at least two wins against the Raiders, Lehigh will eclipse the 35 win mark for the 12th time in head coach Fran Troyan's 20 year tenure.
Â
Lehigh comes into the series at 33-7 overall and 13-2 in league play. Last weekend, senior Emily Bausher fired a two-hit shutout while junior Morgan Decker and senior Emma Capetz delivered RBI singles as Lehigh blanked Army West Point 3-0 in the rubber game of a three-game series at Leadership Park. With the win and a Colgate loss in its series finale at Boston University, the Mountain Hawks were crowned Patriot League regular season champions for fourth consecutive year and 20th time in school history.
Â
The Mountain Hawks won two of three games from Army West Point in their final home league series. Lehigh's scheduled Wednesday doubleheader at Saint Joseph's was canceled, due to the need for Saint Joseph's to make up an Atlantic 10 doubleheader against La Salle.
Â
Decker has come on as of late with five hits and six RBI in four games last week, including the first RBI and first home run at Leadership Park. She has taken over the team lead with 30 RBI and has raised her average to .322. Junior Alexis Watanabe continues to lead the Patriot League with a .434 average, while classmate MacKenzie Velasquez has been especially effective in league games with a .486 batting average in 15 league games, while Decker is up to .442 in league play.
Â
Bausher's two-hitter against Army West Point was her eighth shutout of the season. She earned her sixth Patriot League Pitcher of the Week award of the season on Monday and enters the weekend at 17-5 with a 1.34 ERA and 166 strikeouts in 140.2 innings of work.
Â
Colgate enters this weekend with an opportunity to clinch a berth in the Patriot League tournament. The Raiders are tied for second in the league at 9-6 and are 16-16 overall after sweeping a doubleheader versus Niagara on Thursday. Colgate needs at least one win to secure a tournament berth but can also qualify with help from others in the event of a Lehigh sweep. The Raiders have swept Army West Point and Lafayette in league play and won two of three games at Bucknell but Colgate is 1-5 in its last six league games against Holy Cross and Boston University.Â
Â
The Raiders are led by sophomore Tara Grennan, who leads the Patriot League in home runs (nine) and slugging percentage (.643). Colgate thrives off power hitting. The Raiders sit atop the Patriot League in round trippers with 29, 11 more than the next team. Junior Brigit Ieuter leads Colgate in the circle. She has a 2.47 ERA and has seven complete games this season including a seven-strikeout complete game against Holy Cross.
Â
Lehigh is 70-25 all-time against Colgate with their last meeting coming last spring. The Mountain Hawks' sweep of the Raiders last season included a historic 26-1 victory, which marked the largest margin of victory in program history.
Â
The Mountain Hawks and Raiders will play a doubleheader Saturday with game one beginning at noon, followed by a single game Sunday with first pitch set for noon. Colgate will stream the entire three-game series on the Patriot League Network.
Â
Lehigh will host the Patriot League Tournament May 7-9 at Leadership Park. Bucknell enters the weekend as the only other Patriot League team to clinch a tournament berth although seeds 2-4 are still to be determined. Colgate, Army West Point, Boston University and Holy Cross are still mathematically in contention for the final two spots. In addition to Colgate hosting Lehigh, the final weekend of the regular season has Bucknell hosting Boston University and Holy Cross hosting Lafayette.
