Mountain Hawks blank Army West Point 3-0; claim Patriot League regular season title

4/26/2015 3:11:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Emily Bausher fired a two-hit shutout and junior Morgan Decker and senior Emma Capetz delivered RBI singles as the Lehigh softball team blanked Army West Point 3-0 Sunday in the final game of a three-game series at Leadership Park.

The win, combined with Boston University's 9-3 victory over Colgate gives the Mountain Hawks their fourth consecutive Patriot League regular season championship and 20th regular season title overall. Lehigh will host the Patriot League Tournament at Leadership Park May 7-9.

Bausher's eighth complete game shutout of the season improved Lehigh's record to 33-7 overall and 13-2 in the Patriot League. After giving up two first inning hits but working out of a jam thanks to a fly ball double play, Bausher retired the final 19 batters she faced, striking out nine to improve to 17-5 on the season.

Army West Point kept things close with some outstanding defense in the early innings. The Black Knights made three diving catches in the first two innings, including two from centerfielder Tyler McKinney.

"I was pleased with how Emily got through the first inning," Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "She gave up a couple of hits there but we made some great plays behind her. She pitched great and we played tremendous defense behind her.

"Army came to play today," Troyan continued. "They made some incredible defensive plays. They're a very good team but I feel like we're going to be a tough out in the tournament."

Lehigh finally broke through with two runs in the fourth. Capetz reached on an infield single and freshman Nicole Yozzo followed with an infield hit two batters later. A ground ball moved the runners to second and third before Decker singled through the right side with two outs, scoring both Capetz and Yozzo to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Junior Jessica Calvini led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to left. After a sacrifice by Bausher and a walk to senior Cassie Waggy, Capetz snuck a single down the left field line, bringing Calvini home with Lehigh's third run.

Kristen West went the distance for Army West Point in the pitcher's circle, allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout. She falls to 8-9.

"She's a very hard pitcher to get your rhythm against," Troyan said of West. "She's very deliberate in between pitches. We talked about being relaxed and not getting into the batter's box until they're ready to hit. Our team did an excellent job of executing the offensive game plan."

Army West Point is now 22-24-1 overall and finishes Patriot League regular season play at 9-9. The Black Knights will be the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Tournament unless Boston University sweeps its three-game series at Bucknell next weekend.

Lehigh will play a non-league doubleheader at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday with first pitch of game one set for 3 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will close out the regular season with three games at Colgate next weekend.
