HAMILTON, N.Y. – Behind a pair of strong pitching performances and a game two offensive explosion, the Lehigh softball team began its final regular season Patriot League series with a doubleheader sweep of Colgate at Eaton Street Field. Senior Emily Bausher threw a one-hit shutout as Lehigh pushed across two sixth inning runs to win the opener 2-0.
In the nightcap, junior Jessica Calvini homered twice and drove in six runs to support sophomore Christine Campbell, who threw her first career no-hitter in an 11-0, five-inning win.
The sweep improves Lehigh's record to 35-7 overall and 15-2 in the league.
Game one began as a pitcher's duel between Bausher and Colgate's Brigit Ieuter. Lehigh had two hits in the first but could not score as Bausher and Ieuter traded zeroes.
Colgate's only base runners were on a leadoff walk to Katie Bushee in the fourth inning and a single by Marisa Dowling leading off the fifth.
Lehigh used a two-out rally to score two runs in the top of the sixth. Junior Watanabe doubled to center to start the rally and then scored Lehigh's first run on a single to center by classmate Morgan Decker, who advanced all the way to third on the throw home. Sophomore Vicky Lattanzio followed with a RBI single to put the Mountain Hawks up by two.
Bausher retired the final six batters to close out her ninth shutout of the season. She struck out a season-high 12 batters and with the victory improves to 18-5 on the season.
For Colgate Ieuter allowed two runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Senior Cassie Waggy's RBI single scored Lattanzio to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning in game two. The Mountain Hawks broke the game open with ten runs over the next two innings, with six of the ten coming on Calvini's three-run blasts.
In the third, Decker came up with runners on second and third and brought home freshman Yozzo for an RBI on a fielder's choice as Yozzo beat the throw home. Two batters later, Calvini sent her fourth home run over the centerfield fence to extend Lehigh's lead to 5-0.
Watanabe opened the fourth-inning scoring with a RBI single that scored junior MacKenzie Velasquez while a single by Decker plated two more runs to put Lehigh up by eight. After a walk to Lattanzio, Calvini's second home run of the day, a three-run shot to left gave the Mountain Hawks their 11-0 advantage.
The last Lehigh player to hit two home runs in a game was Bausher, who did so against Brown at the LMU Invitational on March 7, 2014.
Campbell allowed just three base runners on the way to Lehigh's first no-hitter since Becca Bliss '13 and Kelsey Lee '14 combined on a five-inning perfect game at Holy Cross. She walked Bushee to lead off the bottom of the first but worked out of trouble with the help of a double play.
Colgate only had three more base runners in the nightcap as Campbell hit Alyssa Chaulklin to open the third inning and Holly Geranen reached on an error to open the fifth. Chaulklin also walked during Colgate's final time at bat.
Campbell finished with a line of three strikeouts and two walks in her fourth shutout of the season. She is now 15-2.
Megan Carnase took the game two loss for Colgate, allowing 11 runs in 3.2 innings.
Colgate falls to 16-18 overall and 9-8 in the league.
Watanabe led Lehigh offensively with five hits in six at bats on the day.
Lehigh and Colgate will wrap-up their series, and the regular season with a single game beginning Sunday at noon. The game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
