BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Emily Bausher went the distance on a four hit shutout and classmate Emma Capetz went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Lehigh to a 3-0 win over Boston University Friday afternoon at Kaufman Field.
The Mountain Hawks scored single runs in the second, third and sixth innings to complete the three-game regular season sweep of the defending Patriot League champions. Lehigh improves to 28-6 overall and 11-1 in the Patriot League, while Boston University falls to 9-24 and 1-8 in the league.
"Boston came to play today and had a nice game plan," Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "Their pitcher did a great job but I thought we really battled. I don't think we gave away any at bats and we controlled the game. Emily pitched really well and closed out the game which we were pleased to see there. Boston is the returning Patriot League champions so they're a good, strong club. We needed to play well today and we certainly did."
Capetz gave Lehigh the lead in the bottom of the second inning with her third triple of the season and second in as many games. The triple went to right center and scored senior Cassie Waggy from first base.
Lehigh's lead grew to 2-0 in the third as junior Morgan Decker drove in freshman Nicole Yozzo, who led off with a bunt single, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice.
Bausher retired the first nine batters she faced before Moriah Connolly led off the fourth inning with a single to center. After a stolen base, a bloop single by Brittany Younan put runners on second and third after Younan advanced on the throw in, but Bausher struck out Lauren Hynes and got Gabi Martinez to ground out to Decker to end the threat.
Capetz led off the bottom of the sixth with her third hit of the game, a single through the left side, and eventually scored on a two-out infield single by junior Alexis Watanabe.
Bausher posted her seventh shutout of the season, allowing just four singles while striking out six. Her fourth inning strikeout was the 600th of her career as she becomes the third Lehigh pitcher to record 600 career strikeouts. Bausher is now 14-4 on the season.
Makinna Akers took the loss for Boston University, allowing three runs on 11 hits. Decker finished with a pair of doubles in four at bats but the Mountain Hawks left nine runners on base.
Lehigh will step out of league play to visit UMBC for a doubleheader Saturday with first pitch for game one set for 1 p.m.
