Lehigh sweeps doubleheader at UMBC with two come-from-behind wins

4/18/2015 7:30:00 PM | Softball

BALTIMORE – The Lehigh softball team used a pair of come-from-behind victories to sweep a non-league doubleheader against UMBC Saturday at UMBC Softball Stadium. The Mountain Hawks erased a 3-0 deficit with six runs in the top of the seventh to take the opener 6-3. Junior Morgan Decker's RBI single in the sixth inning tied the nightcap at one while her tenth inning two-run single helped Lehigh take the nightcap 5-1 in ten innings.

With Saturday's sweep Lehigh has now won five consecutive games to improve to 30-6 on the season. The Mountain Hawks have reached the 30-win plateau for the 15th consecutive season.

UMBC's Jessica Holte limited the Mountain Hawks to just three hits in the first six innings of the opener as the Retrievers built a 3-0 lead. Carly Lesko singled home a run off sophomore Christine Campbell in the second inning while an error and a fielder's choice led to two runs after three hits.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lehigh loaded the bases on three consecutive singles, before a fourth single from junior Carissa Zito brought home two runs to bring the Mountain Hawks within 3-2. Two batters later freshman Nicole Yozzo reached on an error allowing classmate Katie Schultz and Zito to score the tying and go-ahead runs. A RBI single by junior Alexis Watanabe and an error on a ball hit by Decker allowed two more runs to score.

Campbell settled in to retire the final six batters to close out the game. She improves to 13-2 on the season allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four and walking one. Campbell also hit a pair of Retrievers.

Watanabe and Zito led Lehigh with two hits apiece in the opener.

Lehigh captured game two despite recording just four hits in ten innings. Miranda Clark kept the Mountain Hawks hitless through 5.1 innings. A solo home run by Tori Alexander gave UMBC a 1-0 lead in the third.

Yozzo drew a leadoff walk in the sixth and stole second. Two batters later, Decker recorded Lehigh's first hit, a single through the right side that scored Yozzo to tie the game at 1-1. Pitching took over from there as the game went into extra innings.

The game eventually went to the tenth as Lehigh played its third game of ten innings or more in its last six outings.

In the top of the tenth, senior Cassie Waggy was hit by a pitch to start the inning. A walk to Yozzo and a sacrifice by Watanabe put runners on second and third with one out for Decker, who singled up the middle to bring home two runs and give the Mountain Hawks a 3-1 lead. Like she did against Princeton on Wednesday, sophomore Vicky Lattanzio followed Decker's go-ahead hit with a two run home run, her third of the season, to put Lehigh up by four.

Senior Emily Bausher came on with two outs in the eighth and pitched a perfect bottom of the tenth to earn the victory. Bausher did not allow a hit and fanned four of the eight batters she faced to improve to 15-4 on the season. Freshman Cassie Lajeunesse started and allowed a run on three hits with four walks in 3.1 innings. Campbell followed with 4.1 scoreless innings in between.

In the Patriot League Saturday, Holy Cross and Colgate split a doubleheader, meaning the Mountain Hawks have officially clinched a Patriot League Tournament berth and also reclaimed sole possession of first place in the league standings.

The Mountain Hawks are slated to open their new home field, Leadership Park, with a Wednesday doubleheader against Villanova. First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m. with video coverage of both games scheduled for the Patriot League Network.
