Lehigh to open Leadership Park with Wednesday doubleheader vs. Villanova

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will look to build on its five-game winning streak on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks host Villanova in the inaugural doubleheader at Leadership Park.
Lehigh will finally get to open its long-awaited new softball complex, named Leadership Park. The new complex sits west of the grass soccer field at the Ulrich Sports Complex and north of the Cundey Varsity House, which the softball team uses for their locker room, sports medicine needs and strength training. Leadership Park feature modern stands, a functional press box, larger and enhanced dugouts, a modern cable and netting system and modernized bullpen areas and hitting nets, amenities that are expected to enhance the experience for student-athletes and patrons alike.
The Mountain Hawks have been surging since spring break, winning 21 of their last 24 games dating back to the USF Spring Break Tournament in early March. Lehigh's current win streak includes single game wins over Holy Cross, Princeton and Boston University and a doubleheader sweep of UMBC Saturday in Baltimore.
After last week's unblemished record, Lehigh now stands at 30-6 overall, including an 11-1 mark within the Patriot League. Lehigh has now won at least 30 games in 15 seasons.
Senior Emily Bausher led Lehigh to its 11th Patriot League victory with a four-hit, complete-game shutout of Boston University on Friday. The shutout is Bausher's seventh of the season. Bausher also earned the win in Saturday's second game at UMBC with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to improve to 15-4 on the season.
At the plate, senior shortstop Emma Capetz helped to facilitate the offense with her 3-for-3 performance, including one run and an RBI triple. Junior Morgan Decker had a strong week with five RBI including extra-inning go-ahead RBI in wins over Princeton and UMBC. On both instances, sophomore Vicky Lattanzio followed a Decker RBI hit with a two-run home run.
Villanova comes in at 21-22 on the season, including an 8-7 record within the Big East. The Wildcats won the final two games of their three game series against Providence this past weekend, including a 2-1, eight-inning triumph in the series finale. Villanova went 3-3 in six games last week with a pair of walk-off wins.
Offensively, Brittany Husk leads Villanova with a .331 average, while Dana Morris tops the Wildcats with four home runs and Lauren Herschberg leads with 21 RBI.
Kate Poppe has thrown the most innings in the circle for the Wildcats and has struck out 191 in 158.2 innings to go with her 10-14 record and 2.56 ERA. Poppe leads the Big East in strikeouts and recently became Villanova's career leader at 731. Brette Lawrence leads Villanova with a 10-5 record and 1.74 ERA in 108.1 innings.
Villanova leads the series against Lehigh 28-18-1 and is unbeaten in the last four meetings. The Wildcats swept a doubleheader from the Mountain Hawks down the Main Line in 2009 and earned a win and a tie at Kaufman Field in 2008. Lehigh's last win over Villanova came back in 2007.
First pitch for game one of Wednesday's doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. Video of both games will be streamed on the Patriot League Network.
