BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Playing its best lacrosse of the season, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team wraps up the regular season by hosting archrival Lafayette on Friday at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks have won four of their last five games, including two straight wins over nationally-ranked squads last week. Lehigh still has a chance at the Patriot League Tournament and needs a win and some help on Friday to advance to its fifth straight league tournament.
Friday is Senior Night as Lehigh's 12 seniors will be recognized prior to opening faceoff. Tickets are only five dollars for the general public and can be purchased in advance at LehighTickets.com. Students, faculty and staff are admitted free with their Lehigh ID. The Goodman Bus Service will run at 6:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. and will leave from the Dialogue Center on Taylor Street (between Taylor Street and Grace Hall).
The Mountain Hawks have to beat Lafayette and need Holy Cross to beat Boston University. That would create a three-way tie for sixth place in the standings, which Lehigh would win due to beating both the Crusaders and Terriers earlier this season. Holy Cross is still alive for the sixth seed as well, needing a win and a Lehigh loss to advance as the #6 seed. Both games will be played at the same time.
Lehigh is coming off a 12-11 road victory at #18/14 Stony Brook, handing the Seawolves just their third loss of the season and earning two straight wins over ranked foes for the first time since the end of the 2013 season when the Mountain Hawks defeated #9/11 Bucknell towards the end of the regular season before beating the same Bison in the Patriot League Championship Game.
On Sunday, Lehigh jumped out to a 7-3 halftime lead before Stony Brook began the second half on a 5-0 run to take an 8-7 lead. Lehigh answered with two goals in the span of 55 seconds and wouldn't trail the rest of the way. Senior Dan Taylor led the offense with seven points behind two goals and five assists. Coupled with his six points against Princeton Tuesday, he was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and seventh time in his career. Taylor assisted on Lehigh's final four goals of the game. He was also named Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week. Junior Reid Weber added five points behind four goals and an assist as he's reached four points or more in each of Lehigh's last four victories. Senior Kurtis Kaunas scored twice including the go-ahead goal early in the fourth quarter which was the 50th goal of his career. Sophomore Matt Raposo tallied a career-high two goals as well.
The defense impressed as well, holding Stony Brook, the nation's #5 scoring offense, more than three goals under its average (currently 14.69). Junior Casey Eidenshink led the way with two groundballs and three caused turnovers, shutting down the nation's leading goal scorer Brody Eastwood to one goal on just two shots. Eastwood entered the game with 50 goals in 12 games, coming off a 10-goal effort two days earlier at UMass-Lowell. Senior Lukas Mikelinich also added two groundballs and three caused turnovers while junior Chris Appell scooped four groundballs. Senior Matt Poillon made seven games in goal for the win in a homecoming game for the Mount Sinai native.
The Leopards are just 4-9 overall, but have won three of their last four games. Lafayette earned an impressive Patriot League win over Holy Cross on Apr. 4, sandwiched between nonleague wins over Monmouth and NJIT. Lafayette began its season with a 10-5 win over Wagner, but then lost eight in a row. Jason Sands, a sophomore, leads Lafayette with 41 points behind 11 goals and 30 assists. Eric Joseph has 32 points (24 goals, eight assists) while Robert Orazietti comes in at 23 points (18 goals, five assists) and Kevin Lewis has 21 (14 goals, seven assists). Erik Cannon has been stellar on defense, owning 52 groundballs and 29 caused turnovers. Jack McMahon has taken the majority of the faceoffs, winning 43.5 percent with 13 groundballs. Ben Falcone has put up the best numbers in goal, owning a 9.56 goals against average and .500 save percentage to go with his 3-1 record. He has started each of the last four games.
The Mountain Hawks' dominant 17-6 win last season was their fifth straight against the Leopards and 13th in the last 14 tries. Lehigh has won the last four meetings by four, 10, nine then 11. The sides first met in 1926, a 9-0 Lehigh victory. Lehigh won 10 straight before Lafayette's first win in 1935.
With a win and Boston University loss to Holy Cross, Lehigh would advance to its fifth straight Patriot League Tournament which begins with the quarterfinals on Tuesday (Apr. 21).
