BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off its most impressive and exciting win of the season, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team heads to #18/14 Stony Brook on Sunday for its final regular season road game. Opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m. Lehighsports.com will have a live (free) audio broadcast available on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks look to win their second straight game over a ranked opponent after beating #14/18 Princeton 16-15 in thrilling fashion on Tuesday night.
Â
Lehigh's offense came alive against the Tigers for the program's first win over Princeton since 1890. Senior Dan Taylor snapped a 15-15 tie with just under 16 seconds remaining, giving the Mountain Hawks their first win over a ranked team since last season's Patriot League Semifinals against Army, which also ended in thrilling fashion. Taylor finished the evening with two goals and four assists as he reached 206 career points to surpass David DiMaria and move into second place in school history (and tops in the Patriot League era).
Â
Four other Mountain Hawks tallied a hat trick, including the first of junior Alex Eaton's career along with the second-career hat trick from senior Kurtis Kaunas. Senior Patrick Corbett also had three goals and two assists (to tie a career high) while junior Reid Weber tallied three goals and an assist. In total, Lehigh's starting attack and midfielders combined for 14 goals and 10 assists. The Mountain Hawks reached 16 or more goals for the third time in the last four games, averaging 14.75 goals per game over the last four contests.
Â
The beginning of Tuesday's game featured runs as Lehigh used a 6-1 run to take a 7-3 second-quarter lead, but Princeton answered with a 5-0 run to take an 8-7 advantage. The second half was much closer with no team able to pull away. In total, there were 11 ties and five lead changes as neither team led by more than one over the final 39:22. The game proved very similar to last season's meeting against Princeton which saw Lehigh drop a 10-9 double overtime heartbreaker in a game which saw neither team lead by more than one goal.
Â
The win snapped a three-game home losing streak as Lehigh looks to gain momentum into what could be a crucial regular season finale against Lafayette next Friday. Should Boston University and Holy Cross lose this week (to Loyola and Colgate), the Mountain Hawks would remain in Patriot League Tournament contention heading into the final game of the regular season.
Â
Sunday's Stony Brook game will be a homecoming for many native Long Islanders, including senior three-time All-American goaltender Matt Poillon, who's from Mount Sinai. In addition, Lehigh associate head coach Errol Wilson is a graduate of Stony Brook while head coach Kevin Cassese began his coaching career with the Seawolves. Sunday's game features two of the five active career leaders in points. Taylor is fifth with 206 career points while Mike Rooney is fourth with 208.
Â
Stony Brook has enjoyed a resurgent season after finishing 6-10 last year and falling to Albany in the America East Tournament. That game did go to overtime as the Seawolves nearly upset the high-powered Great Danes. This season, Stony Brook is 9-2 (as of Friday) and has only lost to St. John's (by five) and Albany (by two) while earning some impressive wins over Fairfield and Princeton, who are both currently nationally-ranked. Stony Brook does play at UMass-Lowell on Friday. Led by former Colgate head coach Jim Nagle, the Seawolves are featuring the nation's fifth-best scoring offense which is averaging 14.55 goals per game. The team is led by a duo of Brody Eastwood and Mike Rooney who've already combined for 109 points this season. Eastwood has 43 points behind 40 goals and three assists while Rooney has 66 points (28 goals, 38 assists). Four others have two or more points, including two with 31 points apiece. Jeff Reh leads the team in caused turnovers (nine) while Jay Lindsay owns a team-leading 43 groundballs to go with winning 80-of-147 (.544) from the faceoff X. Two goalies have each played at least 250 minutes, led by Brandon Maciejewski who owns an 8.85 GAA and .480 save percentage.
Â
Stony Brook leads the all-time series 7-5 in a series that's been full of streaks. Lehigh's five wins all came in a row, from 1993-97. The Seawolves have won the last four meetings (in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009). The last two matchups came at Stony Brook. Lehigh's last win came on Mar. 15, 1997 by a 13-12 final.
Â
The Mountain Hawks wrap up the regular season when they host archrival Lafayette on Friday (Apr. 17) at 7 p.m.
