BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After its spring opener last weekend, the Lehigh rowing team returns to action at the Murphy Cup on Saturday. Racing begins at 8:30 a.m. on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey.
Â
Last weekend, the Mountain Hawks got off to a tough start vs. Temple in the morning, but the crews bounced back with a strong effort against Delaware later in the day.
Â
"It was good to see the team bounce back from a tough start to race better in the second race of the day," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We have used that as a learning platform to understand how important each race is to us finding success at the end of the season."
Â
Saturday's Murphy Cup will be a good barometer for the Mountain Hawks.
Â
"We will see a lot of tough competition and potentially our first against some Patriot League counterparts, so we'll know where we are early on in the season in comparison," said Conley.
Â
Last season, the Mountain Hawks placed three crews in the grand finals and another in the petite finals. The Men's Freshmen Eight captured silver in the grand finals while the Men's Freshmen Four and Men's Varsity Eight also reached the finals. The Women's Varsity Eight finished second in the petite finals.
Â
The team looks to get off to a fast start on Saturday and set the tone from the beginning.
Â
"I am looking for the team to show their speed right off the docks," said Conley. "Staying composed and showing the immense aggression that I've seen in practice in all the boats. This will be a heats and finals style of racing, so we need to be on top of our game from stroke one."
Â
Lehigh will return to action in two weeks at the Knecht Cup on Apr. 11 and 12. The River Cup against Lafayette originally scheduled for next Saturday (Apr. 4) has been moved to Apr. 25 on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown.
