BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off an impressive 16-5 win at Monmouth Tuesday, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team heads to Holy Cross for a crucial Patriot League matchup on Saturday. Opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m. With wins in their last three league games, the Mountain Hawks would have an excellent chance at advancing to the Patriot League Tournament for a fifth straight season.
Â
Lehigh's win on Tuesday snapped a six-game losing streak. An all-around effort saw its offense score a season-high 16 goals and defense allow a season-low five goals. The 16 goals were by far the most scored against the Monmouth defense, the second-ranked defense in the nation (allowing just six goals per game coming in).The Mountain Hawks won 13-of-25 while freshman goalie Adam Sawicki finished with eight saves in his third strong effort in as many starts. The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 9-0 lead and wouldn't look back. The victory came over a Monmouth team that was 4-3 coming in with impressive wins over defending MAAC Champion Siena while also beating Rutgers out of the Big Ten.
Â
Lehigh looks to get right back into the Patriot League Tournament race with a win on Saturday. The game marks the squad's second of three straight on the road before returning home to host Princeton on Tuesday, Apr. 7. The Mountain Hawks' other home game is a league contest against archrival Lafayette on Friday, Apr. 17.
Â
Senior Dan Taylor led Lehigh's offense on Tuesday, tallying seven points behind five goals and two assists. Junior Reid Weber tied a career high with five points (two goals, three assists) while senior Kurtis Kaunas tied a career high as well with four (two goals, two assists). Junior Casey Eidenshink led the defense with five groundballs while freshman Matt Ernst won 11-of-21 faceoffs. Sawicki impressed from the beginning, stopping all four shots sent his way in the first quarter, shutting out an opponent in the first quarter for a second straight Tuesday (also shutting out Denver in the first on Mar. 17).
Â
The 16 goals were the most since last year's regular season finale, a 17-6 win at Lafayette. The five goals allowed were the fewest since last Apr. 12 against Georgetown. Eight of the Mountain Hawks' 16 goals were assisted. Monmouth scored four-of-five goals bridging the end of the first and beginning of the second halves, but Lehigh ended with a vengeance, scoring six of the final seven goals. The Mountain Hawks cleared the bench, giving many players fourth-quarter minutes. Senior Klay Heston made the most of it, scoring his first goal of the season, as did sophomore Anthony Ramaziel, who scored his first-career goal off a nifty feed from classmate Matt Raposo. That made it 16-5 with 3:44 remaining, which stood as the final.
Â
Holy Cross is in the midst of an impressive season, highlighted by wins over the preseason #1 and 2 teams in the Patriot League. The Crusaders caught the lacrosse world by storm with a 13-12 win at defending league champion Loyola on Feb. 21. That gave the Greyhounds their first-ever Patriot League defeat. Holy Cross opened the season with a 10-9 win over a very formidable Fairfield squad, while earning a 7-6 home victory over Army as well. Sean Wilkinson leads the team in scoring with 31 points behind 15 goals and 16 assists. Kevin Lux is next with 22 points (17 goals, five assists) and Terry McKenna has 16 (12 goals, four assists). Will Gaudreau leads the team with 12 caused turnovers while faceoff specialist Tyler Purdue has scooped a team-leading 33 groundballs, to go with winning exactly 50 percent at the X. Michael Ortlieb has played every minute in goal and owns a 11.11 GAA and .482 save percentage.
Â
Lehigh is 24-0 all-time against Holy Cross, coming off a dominating 20-4 victory against the Crusaders last season. The last game at Holy Cross was in 2013, an 8-5 Mountain Hawks' victory.
Â
Following Saturday's game, Lehigh will head to Colgate next Saturday (Apr. 4) to face the Raiders at 2 p.m.
