Mountain Hawks complete outdoor opener at Philly Classic

PHILADELPHIA –The Lehigh men's track and field team finished competition at the Philadelphia Classic hosted by Penn Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field with several impressive performances in the outdoor opener.

"We were solid on the track and I am pleased with the competitive fight we showed in our races," said head coach Matt Utesch. "We are in a very heavy training cycle and I fully expect the team to freshen up and be much faster as the season goes on."

Lehigh took the top three places in the triple jump, with freshman Michael Camera leading the way in first with a leap of 12.99 meters. Senior Beau Whitman earned third in the pole vault with a mark of 4.40 meters. Sophomore Daniel Boardman placed third in the long jump with a leap of 6.59 meters. Senior Benjamin Beauchamp was Lehigh's highest finisher in the hammer throw (second – 53.62 meters), the discus (fourth – 47.94 meters) and the shot put (sixth - 13.57 meters)
Junior Robert Hugin claimed third in both the the 110 meter hurdles (16.65) 400 meter hurdles (58.16). Sophomore Tom Troxell followed right behind in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.42 that was good for fourth place.

Freshman John Tolbert earned a third-place finish in the 1,500 meter run after crossing the finish line in 4:00.86. Sophomore Ryan Cooney was Lehigh's highest finisher in the 5,000 meter run after finishing with a time of 15:00.59 that was good for 13th place.

Sophomore Seamus Cullinane (1:59.43) and freshman James Chappell (2:00.09) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 800 meter dash. Freshman Jake Sabatini claimed sixth place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.54 and ninth in the 200 meter dash with a clip of 22.96.

The 4x100 meter relay team finished in 43.67 seconds, while the 4x400 meter relay squad crossed the line in 3:31.77.

The Mountain Hawks will split their teams next weekend between the Winthrop Invitational, Raleigh Relays and Lafayette 7-Way. Â
