Brown advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in his career, defeating Willie Miklus of Missouri 5-4 at 184. Brown opened the scoring with a first period takedown and added three escapes while Miklus stayed in contention with a pair of reversals. Tied 4-4 after two periods, Brown escaped to open the third and made the 5-4 score stand. He will now face No. 2 seed Max Thomusseit of Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals. Thomusseit owns a pair of two point victories over Brown this season.
Â
Sophomore Randy Cruz and senior Santiago Martinez were sent to the consolations with round of 16 losses Friday night. Cruz hung tough with No. 4 seed and returning finalist Devin Carter of Virginia Tech at 141 but a six point second period that featured two takedowns and two stalling points helped Carter win 8-6. Next up for Cruz is Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin in Friday's second round consolations.
Â
Martinez ran into the No. 2 seed at 174, Penn State's two-time All-American Matt Brown. A late first period takedown staked Brown to a 2-0 lead and a strong third period powered Brown to a 10-2 major decision. Martinez will also face a Wisconsin wrestler in Friday's second round consolations, Frank Cousins.
Â
In the lightweights, freshman Scott Parker and junior Mason Beckman bounced back from first round losses to win first round consolations.
Â
Parker collected a takedown in each period and pulled away from Arizona State's Ares Carpio to win 9-5 at 125. He will face the No. 11 seed Jordan Conaway of Penn State on Friday, looking to avenge a one-point loss earlier this season.
Â
Beckman gave up the first takedown to Scott Delvecchio of Rutgers but rallied to score a takedown in each period to win 9-4. He will now face Penn's Caleb Richardson in the second round of consolations.
Â
"Everybody fought but we lost some tough matches," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said of his team's first day. "Nobody likes losing. We had some guys lose but they can come back and take third. It's about the team right now. We have to come back and score a lot of points in the wrestlebacks. That's a gut check and a character check."
Â
The only Lehigh wrestler eliminated on Thursday was sophomore Elliot Riddick who was done in by a late third period takedown in a 7-6 loss to Scottie Boykin of Chattanooga. Riddick's sophomore campaign ends at 17-13.
Â
Ohio State leads the team race with 23 points followed by Iowa with 21. Oklahoma State (19.5), Penn State (18.5) and Missouri and Nebraska (18) complete the top five.
Â
"We have a lot of wrestling left and we have to make the most of it tomorrow," Santoro said. "We have two guys in the championship bracket and the other guys know they have to continue to win. Our focus is on just winning the next match and then the one after that."
