This past Saturday's game at Navy saw a number of momentum shifts. The Midshipmen rode strong play at the faceoff X to take a 6-1 lead, Lehigh responded to take an 11-9 advantage, but Navy scored four straight goals and wouldn't look back. Senior Dan Taylor led the Lehigh offense with six points via four goals and two assists while classmate Patrick Corbett tallied a hat trick with three goals and one assist, his second hat trick in three games this season. Junior Reid Weber and senior Kurtis Kaunas each finished with two goals and one assist. In the process, Kaunas eclipsed 50-career points.
Â
After winning just 1-of-12 first-quarter faceoffs, the Mountain Hawks came back to win 5-of-7 over the middle quarters and outscore Navy 6-2 in that span. Lehigh was 0-for-7 from the faceoff X in the fourth quarter and struggled to get much going. Kaunas' second goal in as many shots gave his squad an 11-9 advantage with 13:02 remaining, but Navy scored four straight until a last-second desperation shot from Weber pulled Lehigh within one (13-12) but with just four seconds remaining.
Â
Junior Casey Eidenshink led the close defense with six groundballs and two caused turnovers. Classmate Tripp Telesco had two groundballs and a caused turnover while senior Lukas Mikelinich tallied three groundballs. Lehigh was strong on the ground as Weber had five and Corbett tied a career high with four. The Mountain Hawks held a 38-37 edge in GBs for the game, including a 21-10 advantage over the middle quarters.
Â
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak against Navy. In 2011, Lehigh beat Navy for the first time in 98 years and hadn't lost since. Taylor has enjoyed tremendous success against Navy, especially over the past two seasons. Over the last three games, he's tallied 11 goals and six assists for 17 points. Going back to his sophomore year, he's posted 21 points (14 goals and seven assists) over his last four games against the Midshipmen. Two of Corbett's three goals were assisted by Taylor as five of his eight goals this season have been assisted by Taylor.
Â
Denver has made three of the last four Final Fours, all under head coach Bill Tierney. The Pioneers return much of their team, which led to their preseason #1 ranking in both national polls. So far this season, Denver is 4-2 with wins over Duke, Air Force, Furman and Notre Dame and losses to North Carolina and Ohio State. Maryland transfer Connor Cannizzaro leads the team in scoring with 29 points behind 17 goals and 12 assists. Zach Miller is next with 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) while Wesley Berg has 18 points (12 goals, six assists). Erik Adamson (12 goals, two assists) and Tyler Pace (six goals, eight assists) each had 14 points. Trevor Baptiste has been stellar at the faceoff X, winning 99-of-146 with a team-high 41 groundballs. Mike Riis leads the team with four caused turnovers to go with 25 groundballs. Ryan LaPlante has started all six games in goal, owning a 9.64 GAA and .472 save percentage. In each of the last two seasons, LaPlante split time with Jamie Faus, who graduated last year.
Â
Lehigh trails Denver 3-0 in the all-time series. The squads first met in 2001, a 14-12 loss in Denver. The teams played again in 2010 (8-7 loss) and 2013 (18-10 defeat), both on the road.
Â
Tuesday's game will feature Denver's Berg and Taylor who are currently #2 and 5 in the nation in career points among active players with 195 and 178 points, respectively. Both are from Canada. Berg is also first with 142 career goals. Army's John Glesener, who the Mountain Hawks face on Saturday, is #4 with 179 career points.
