BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a dominant effort against Army, the Lehigh men's basketball team travels to Loyola Saturday looking to win its sixth game in the last seven tries. Opening tipoff in Baltimore is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will look to avenge a tough 65-60 loss to Loyola in the first meeting between the two squads. Lehigh and Loyola enter this weekend within one game of each other in the ever-crowded Patriot League standings.
Â
The Mountain Hawks exploded for 103 points against Army, becoming the first team to eclipse 100 points in a Patriot League game since Jan. 10, 2010 when Colgate beat Navy 100-91. The point total was Lehigh's most since a 2004 overtime loss at Lafayette and most in a win (and in regulation) since scoring 105 against Cornell to begin the 1994-95 season. The Mountain Hawks scored 61 first-half points, falling just one point shy of a Stabler Arena record for points in any half.
Â
Sophomore Miles Simelton led the charge with a career-high 18 points and career-high six assists. He was red-hot offensively, knocking down 6-of-8 shots, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Sophomore Tim Kempton had 17 points and eight rebounds while junior Jesse Chuku and sophomore Austin Price had 14 points apiece. Chuku was also 3-of-4 from three-point range, knocking down 5-of-7 field goals overall. Senior Corey Schaefer added ten points as five Mountain Hawks finished with double-figure points for the second time in the last four games (also at Lafayette). Lehigh's defense was just as impressive as its offense, holding the Black Knights to just 34 percent shooting (21-of-62) and just 30 percent on two-pointers (9-of-30). Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Kyle Wilson was held below his average, scoring just 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting.
Â
Over its last three games, Lehigh has opened leads of 16, 22 and 33 points, respectively. The Mountain Hawks have eclipsed 75 points in three of their last four games, averaging 82.3 points in that span. Lehigh is now 12-6 after an 0-4 start to the season. The Mountain Hawks have played tremendous team basketball, with assists on 29 of the team's 35 made field goals on Wednesday. Freshman Kahron Ross had 11 of them and did not turn the ball over. In the process, he moved from 14th to seventh in school history for assists in a single season (now with 134). It marked Ross' fourth-career game, and second straight, with double-figure assists.
Â
Loyola enters the weekend with a 9-13 overall record and 5-6 mark in the Patriot League. The Greyhounds have enjoyed success, especially at home, earning Patriot League victories over American, Boston University and Holy Cross. Last time out, Loyola lost a 64-49 final at American. Eric Laster leads the team in scoring with his 11.5 average. Two others are averaging double-figures: Tyler Hubbard (10.9 ppg) and Andre Walker (10.6 ppg). Cam Gregory leads the team in rebounding (7.2) while also averaging 6.5 points per game. Denzel Brito leads the team in assists with 57. The Greyhounds are shooting just .383 from the field and allowing opponents to shoot .442, but the Greyhounds outrebound their opponents 35.3 to 33.4 on average.
Â
The all-time series between Lehigh and Loyola is tied at six after the Greyhounds' 65-60 win earlier this season. Prior to last season, the teams hadn't played since November of 1988. The sides first met in 1912-13, a 41-19 Lehigh victory. Loyola's first win was in 1915-16 by a 35-15 final.
Â
Following Saturday's game, Lehigh will return home next Thursday (Feb. 12) to host American at 7 p.m. That game will air nation-wide on CBS Sports Network.
