ORLANDO, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team pounded out 23 hits over two games on its opening day of the 2015 season Friday at the Citrus Classic II. In Friday morning's season-opener the Mountain Hawks overcame an early 5-0 deficit to register ten hits in a 6-5 win over Omaha. Lehigh escaped an early 2-0 hole against Indiana to take a 5-2 lead but four big innings lifted the Hoosiers to a 15-7, six-inning win in the nightcap, forcing the Mountain Hawks to settle for an opening day split.
Senior Emily Bausher overcame a rocky second inning to strike out ten in a complete game effort to earn the win against Omaha.
Freshman Nicole Yozzo went 7-for-8 on the day with three runs scored to lead the Lehigh offense, while junior Jessica Calvini added four hits and drove in three runs.
In Friday's first game Omaha tagged Bausher for five runs in the bottom of the second inning, Lizzie Noble opened the scoring with a two-run home run to left while three Maverick hits plus a Lehigh error and a passed ball led to three more runs.
Lehigh responded with two runs in its next at bat as sophomore Vicky Lattanzio's bases-loaded two-run single plated junior Alexis Watanabe and freshman pinch runner Katie Schultz. The Mountain Hawks scored a single run in the fourth when Yozzo scored when Watanabe reached on an error.
In the fifth, Lehigh put runners on second and third with one out. Senior Emma Capetz hit a ground ball to shortstop and Calvini beat the throw home to bring Lehigh within 5-4. Two batters later, Yozzo dropped down a bunt single to third base, scoring junior Carissa Zito with the tying run.
The Mountain Hawks took the lead in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI single by senior Cassie Waggy that scored Calvini. Bausher took care of the rest; retiring the final ten batters she faced, including five via strikeout to cement the come-from-behind win.
Bausher allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits to earn the win. She struck out ten and walked three. Kat Barrow went the first four innings for Omaha (5-5), allowing five runs before giving way to Carly Nielsen, who suffered the loss.
In the afternoon against Indiana Lehigh tallied 13 hits but three Mountain Hawk pitchers yielded 15 runs on 16 hits including three home runs. Kelsey Dotson homered twice, including a grand slam to lead Indiana, which improved to 3-14 on the season.
The Hoosiers led 2-0 after half an inning before the Mountain Hawks responded in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded and one out, Calvini doubled to center, clearing the bases and putting the Mountain Hawks in front. Capetz added a two-out two-RBI single as Lehigh lead 5-2 after an inning.
Indiana reclaimed the lead with six runs in the top of the third. A pair of RBI singles brought Indiana within 5-4 before Dotson connected for a grand slam off sophomore Christine Campbell to give the Hoosiers an 8-5 lead.
Lehigh got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as junior Morgan Decker doubled home Yozzo who led off with an infield single, but Indiana answered with three in the fifth on a RBI single by Rebecca Blitz and a two-run home run by Dotson.
Freshman Lindsay Phillips delivered a pinch hit run scoring single in the fifth that plated Lattanzio but the Hoosiers put the game away with four runs in the top of the sixth and the game ended when Lehigh failed to score in the bottom of the frame.
Campbell allowed eight runs in three innings and suffered the loss. Lattanzio made her first college appearance in the pitcher's circle and yielded four runs in 2.1 innings. Freshman Cassie Lajeunesse made her debut collecting the final two outs of the sixth and allowing three runs.
Indiana starter Miranda Tamayo only lasted one-third of an inning but Lora Olson came on to hold Lehigh to just two runs on ten hits to earn the victory.
Lehigh continues play at the Citrus Classic II on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks face Maryland at 1:15 p.m. and No. 23 Notre Dame at 5:45 p.m. from ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex.
