Strong pitching carries Lehigh to two wins on final day of Citrus Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. – After getting rained out on Saturday, the Lehigh softball team finished the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic II with a pair of close victories on Sunday. Senior Emily Bausher fired a one-hitter as the Mountain Hawks opened the day with a 2-0 victory over Northern Iowa. Sophomore Christine Campbell then held Saint Francis (Pa.) to a single hit through the first six innings before successfully thwarting a seventh inning Red Flash rally to give Lehigh a 3-2 victory.
Freshman Nicole Yozzo had another strong day going 5-for-6 with three runs scored, while junior Alexis Watanabe recorded four hits and a pair of RBI for the Mountain Hawks, who finished their first weekend of play with a 3-1 record.
Bausher retired the final 16 batters she faced in the opener as she posted her second win of the season and her 16th career shutout. Northern Iowa only had three baserunners in the game as Rikki Alcaraz reached on a Yozzo error in the first, Macey Wolfe doubled with two outs in the second and Julia Hunter followed with a walk. Bausher finished with four strikeouts, including a strikeout of Samantha Olson to end UNI's second inning rally.
Lehigh registered six hits against UNI but was unable to score until the sixth inning. Yozzo led off with a bunt single and moved to second base with two outs after a ground out. Junior Morgan Decker then singled to left, scoring Yozzo to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for senior Cassie Waggy, who struck out but reached base on a passed ball as pinch runner Katie Schultz scored from third.
Chelsea Ross took the loss for UNI (5-9) allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one.
In Sunday's second game, Yozzo and Watanabe teamed up to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead after three innings. Yozzo led off both the first and third innings with singles and after sacrifice bunts from Schultz moved her into scoring position, Watanabe brought her home with a pair of singles.
Lehigh added what proved to be a key insurance run in the seventh as freshman Carolyn Wright led off with a walk and eventually came around to score on a single by junior MacKenzie Velasquez.
Campbell kept Saint Francis hitless through five before Jordan Seneca led off the sixth with a single. After a passed ball and a wild pitch, Lindsey Reid's RBI ground out put the Red Flash on the board.
After Velasquez re-established a two-run lead in the top of the seventh, Saint Francis did its best to rally in the bottom of the frame. Alexis Bower led off with a single and then scored on a double by Kindra Witthus. A walk put runners on first and second, before Campbell recorded two outs via a strikeout and a popup back to the circle. A walk to Seneca loaded the bases with two outs but Campbell struck out Maggie Creciun to end the game.
Campbell allowed two runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts to nab her first win of the season as she improves to 1-1. Blaire Lauthers allowed three runs on eight hits and suffered her first loss of the season. The loss drops Saint Francis to 5-1 on the year.
Yozzo finished her debut weekend 12-for-14 at the plate (.857) with six runs scored and the game-tying RBI in Lehigh's season opening win over Omaha on Friday.
Lehigh will return to Florida for 12 games in eight days over spring break. The Mountain Hawks will begin with six games at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven March 7-9. Lehigh will open the Rebel Spring Games with contests against Sacred Heart (10 a.m.) and Presbyterian (12:15 p.m.) on Saturday March 7.
