ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lehigh women's track and field team finished in third place at the three-day indoor Patriot League Championship meet that wrapped up Sunday at Navy's Wesley A. Brown Field House. Junior Gabrielle Wardle was named the Field Athlete of the Meet while senior Victoria Mullane won the 800 meter run to highlight the final day of the championship. The Lehigh women finish the meet with three event titles (pentathlon, high jump and 800 meter run), and three second-place finishes (pentathlon, high jump, 60 meter hurdles).
"I love the way the league has developed," said head coach Matt Utesch. "It's been very interesting to watch the league move into a very competitive field. It's such an exciting meet, which is the way track and field ought to be. I'm very proud and happy for our team and how they did.
"We asked our kids to come out and do something they've never done before, and we saw it time and time again," continued Utesch. "It's becoming the culture of our team. On the last throw, jump or meet at the line we beat out other teams because our kids layed it all on the line, which reveals the tremendous character and competitiveness of our kids."
Wardle was named the Field Athlete of the Meet after an impressive showing in three separate field events. She finished second in the pentathlon, second in the high jump and sixth in the long jump to secure 19 points for the Mountain Hawks over the weekend.
"Elly showed such great character and tenacity throughout the whole weekend," said Utesch. "She fell in two events to her own teammates, but always held her head up high and was there to support her teammates and continue doing great things herself. I'm so proud of her and very happy that she won this award."
Bucknell earned the team crown with 180 team points, while Boston University (112.50), Lehigh (107), Holy Cross (104.50) and Navy (101) comprised the top five.
Mullane earned the 800 meter run title after crossing the finish line in 2:15.46. Freshman Tyler Scanlin followed in third place with a personal-best clip of 2:15.96 as the two Mountain Hawks combined for 16 team points.
Sophomore Katie Hatler finished as the runner-up in the 60 meter hurdles after crossing the finish line in an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.82 seconds to claim eight team points.
Sophomore Marissa Karl earned sixth place and three team points in the mile run with a personal-best time of 5:02.82. Freshman Rachel Okun turned out a new personal record in the 500 meter dash with a clip of 1:17.78 that was good for sixth place and three team points. Senior Ingrid Simon also finished sixth and secured three points with her mark of 2:57.67 in the 1,000 meter run.
The Distance Medley Relay team of Simon, Scanlin, Mullane and freshman Amanda Fischer grabbed third place and six team points with an ECAC-qualifying time of 12:05.08.
The quartet of sophomores Soraya Theard and Lindsay Voltz, freshman Hanna Brosky and senior Halie Carter took fifth place in the 4x400 meter relay to grab four team points with a time of 3:55.76.
Senior Jonelle Jerwick picked up three team points with a sixth-place finish in the pole vault (3.45m). Senior Carly Deskins collected two team points with her seventh-place finish in the shot put (11.91 meters). Classmate Serenah Polite earned Lehigh's highest finish in the triple jump, placing eighth with a mark of 11.08 meters to earn one team point.
Next up, those Mountain Hawks that have qualified will compete at the ECAC Championships at Boston University for a chance to advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships. The ECACs will be held March 6-8.
