IOWA CITY, Iowa – In a match that came down to overtime in the final bout at heavyweight, a takedown from sophomore Doug Vollaro gave him a 4-2 victory over Nick Tavanello and gave No. 11 Lehigh a 21-18 upset win over No. 3 Ohio State Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NWCA National Duals at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Mountain Hawks won six of ten bouts against the Buckeyes, with all six victories coming against Ohio State wrestlers ranked in the top 12 of the latest NCAA Coaches' Panel rankings. The victory was also the 100th for Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro as head coach of the Mountain Hawks.

With the win, Lehigh advanced to the semifinals where the Mountain Hawks came up on the short end of a 23-9 score against No. 2 Missouri. The Tigers won seven of ten bouts to move into Sunday's finals against No. 1 Iowa. Lehigh will face EIWA rival and sixth-ranked Cornell for third place.

Juniors Mason Beckman and Nathaniel Brown and sophomore Mitch Minotti all went 2-0 on the day, with Brown's second period pin of Kenny Courts at 184 keyed the upset of Ohio State

Lehigh's six wins against the Buckeyes helped overcome three bonus point wins from top three-ranked Ohio State wrestlers.

Ohio State's Nathan Tomasello opened the dual with a 9-3 decision over freshman Scott Parker at 125 before Beckman evened the score with a 1-0 win over Johnni DiJulius at 133. The only point in Beckman's win was for riding time courtesy of a second period ride out.

Top-ranked Logan Stieber, a three-time NCAA champion, put the Buckeyes back in front after pinning sophomore Randy Cruz in 4:52 at 141 but Lehigh took the next two bouts to even the dual at its halfway point. At 149, freshman Drew Longo edged Randy Languis 2-1 in the tiebreakers after riding out the first half of the tiebreaker and escaping in the second half. Minotti then used a late third period takedown to knock off Josh Demas 3-1 at 157.

At 165, Ohio State's third-ranked freshman Bo Jordan gave the Buckeyes a 14-9 lead with a 22-6 technical fall over senior Marshall Peppelman.

Senior Santiago Martinez helped Lehigh rally in the see-saw dual riding a first period takedown to a 4-2 upset of No. 11 Mark Martin at 174. Brown then followed with his fourth fall of the season to put the Mountain Hawks up 18-14 with two bouts remaining. After a scoreless first period, Brown was on bottom to start the second and reversed Courts to his back before securing the pin at 3:30.

The Buckeyes tied the dual at 18-18 after 197 as third-ranked Buckeye freshman Kyle Snyder won a 9-1 major decision over sophomore Elliot Riddick.

In the decisive heavyweight bout, Vollaro and the 11th-ranked Tavanello traded escapes through regulation and the first set of overtime periods. Vollaro had a 20 second riding time advantage after the first set of tiebreakers but didn't need it as he countered a Tavenello shot with a single leg for the winning takedown halfway through the second sudden victory period.

The win was the first for Lehigh over a top five-ranked team since January 20, 2011 when the Mountain Hawks defeated No. 1 Cornell 17-15 at Stabler Arena.

The Mountain Hawks were unable to continue the momentum into the semifinals as the second ranked Tigers moved to 23-0 on the dual season with seven wins including major decisions at 141 and 149.

Top-ranked Alan Waters opened the dual with a 6-3 decision over Parker before Beckman evened things up with a 9-4 win over Zach Synon. Beckman scored three first period takedowns to open a 6-2 lead but was unable to secure the major decision late.

Missouri built an 11-3 advantage behind major decisions from No. 5 Lavion Mayes over Cruz and No. 5 Drake Houdashelt over Longo.

Minotti picked up Lehigh's second win of the match with a 2-0 decision over Joseph LaVallee, riding out the second period and then escaping early in the third to earn his second win over a top ten opponent on the day.

The Tigers claimed four of the final five bouts by decision, with Lehigh's lone win coming via Brown's 7-3 decision over Willie Miklus. Brown scored an early takedown and built more than two minutes of riding time. He added a takedown in the final seconds to go along with two escapes and riding time advantage.

The NWCA National Duals conclude Sunday with the championship finals and third place match beginning at 11:30 a.m. CT (12:30 p.m. ET) from Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Lehigh will look to avenge a 21-9 loss to Cornell at home on January 25. Video coverage will be available online via BTN2Go.com.
