No. 7 Lehigh to face pair of ranked Big Ten foes at Northeast Duals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A pair of nationally-ranked Big Ten Opponents await No. 7 Lehigh Sunday at the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The Mountain Hawks will begin with No. 16 Minnesota before taking on No. 10 Nebraska. Lehigh opened its dual season with a 23-12 win at Bucknell on November 6. Tied 12-12 after seven bouts, Lehigh won the final three bouts with senior Nathaniel Brown winning by technical fall and seniors John Bolich and Max Wessell adding decisions to give the Mountain Hawks their seventh season-opening win in the last eight years. Last Sunday, 23 Mountain Hawks competed in the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open with nine wrestlers placing in the top six of their respective weight classes. Leading the way for Lehigh were junior Randy Cruz and sophomore Darian Cruz, who won the 141 and 125-pound titles, respectively.

Two Lehigh freshmen posted victories in their varsity dual debuts against Bucknell. Cortlandt Schuyler put Lehigh on the board with a first period pin of Tyler Smith. Preisch won a solid 5-1 decision over Robert Schlitt at 165. Schuyler and Preisch both deferred their eligibility last season. Schuyler went 18-10 competing unattached at 141 while Preisch was an impressive 16-5 at 165. The Bucknell dual marked the first time since 2009-10 that Lehigh opened its season without a true freshman in the lineup.

In his first varsity action, freshman Cortlandt Schuyler pinned Bucknell NCAA qualifier Tyler Smith in just 1:06 to pull the Mountain Hawks even with the Bison after three bouts. In doing so, Schuyler became the first Lehigh wrestler to win by fall in his varsity debut since Eric Hess pinned Binghamton' Vince Grella in 2:18 in the 2012-13 season-opener. Two-years prior, Austin Meys debuted with a second period pin of Drexel's Justin Wieller. Schuyler followed up his Bucknell performance with a 6-2 showing at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open that including two more wins by fall.

Nathaniel Brown moved up to 184 following his sophomore season and the move paid off for the Lewisburg native, who reached the NCAA finals and earned his first All-America medal last season. Brown finished his junior season at 29-6 with the six losses coming against just two opponents. He also posted the first six wins by fall of his Lehigh career. Brown is now a three-time NCAA qualifier and is ranked in the top four in the polls as he begins his senior campaign. He owns a 68-19 career record. Brown opened his season with a technical fall win over Bucknell's Nick Stephani while competing in his hometown.

Lehigh is making its seventh trip in the last nine years to the Northeast Duals, which is now in its tenth year of existence overall. The Mountain Hawks went 3-0 in 2013 with wins over Central Michigan, Virginia and Columbia and have won their last seven matches at the Northeast Duals, dating back to 2011. Lehigh is now 16-4 all-time at the Northeast Duals, including a win over Nebraska in 2009. In Lehigh's six previous appearances, the Northeast Duals were held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

No. 16 Minnesota brings a 3-0 record into the Northeast Duals. The Golden Gophers hosted the season-opening Gopher Duals last Saturday in Minneapolis and defeated Grand Canyon (31-3), Virginia (19-15) and South Dakota State (20-13). Minnesota finished eighth at last year's NCAA Championships but must replace four 2015 All-Americans who were lost to graduation.

The Gophers' top wrestler is heavyweight Michael Kroells, who finished eighth at last season's NCAA Tournament and enters this weekend ranked sixth by InterMat. Junior Brett Pfarr has moved up to 197 where he is currently ranked sixth. Also ranked for Minnesota are freshmen Skyler Petry (125) and Tommy Thorn (141). Coach J Robinson is in his 30th season at Minnesota, where he has led the Gophers to three national championships.

No. 10 Nebraska opens its season at the Northeast Duals, with matches against Lock Haven and Oregon State prior to taking on Lehigh. The Cornhuskers sent wrestlers to the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Nov. 1 with six men earning titles. Nebraska has eight wrestlers ranked by InterMat led by seniors Jake Sueflohn (149) and Austin Wilson (165) who are both ranked fifth. Sueflohn was one of NU's six titlists at the Daktronics Open. Also ranked in the top ten for Nebraska are Anthony Abidin (141), Aaron Studebaker (197), Tim Lambert (125) and TJ Dudley (184).

Nebraska was 14-1 in duals last season and finished ninth at the NCAA Championships. Mark Manning is in his 16th season as Nebraska's head coach.

Lehigh has a limited history with both schools it will face on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks are 1-2 versus Minnesota and haven't faced the Golden Gophers since 2005. Lehigh and Nebraska will meet for the eighth time, and the first since an 18-15 Lehigh win at the Northeast Duals in November 2009.
