BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following its first loss in nearly four weeks, the Lehigh women's soccer looks to get back on track this Saturday at Army West Point. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will then play their second game in three days at Penn Monday night.
The Lehigh defense excelled once again on Wednesday evening at Navy, holding down a Midshipmen squad, which scored 17 goals over their previous five games. In the end, the Mountain Hawks extended their shutout streak to nearly 300 minutes, reaching 296:07 until a second-half Navy goal. Lehigh's best offensive opportunity came as the game came to a close when senior Paige Elliott fired a shot towards goal, which was saved, before a Mids defender cleared the rebound with sophomore Grace Correll barreling in.
After a strong start to the season offensively, Lehigh has struggled as of late. The Mountain Hawks scored 21 goals over their first seven games, but have been shut-out in three straight contests. The defense has allowed just one goal in that span, though, as Lehigh has begun Patriot League play 0-1-2.
Army West Point enters the weekend with a 3-7-1 record, including a 1-1-1 mark in the league. The Black Knights began the season 2-1, but have won just one game since, over Lafayette on Sept. 26. They also earned a tie against Navy. Katie Holder leads the team in scoring with 11 points behind four goals and three assists. She's had a hand in seven of the team's 11 goals so far this season. Bailey Widman (two goals) and Clare Shea (one goal, two assists) are both tied for second with four points apiece while Jordan Cassalia has seen the majority of time in goal, owning a 1.63 GAA and .709 save percentage.
The Black Knights lead the all-time series, 15-6-5, but the Mountain Hawks have gone 1-0-1 over the last two meetings. Last season, the teams played to a scoreless draw, one year after a 1-0 Lehigh win at West Point when Elliott scored the game's only goal in the Mountain Hawks' victory. Lehigh is 2-1-2 over its last five games vs. Army West Point.
Penn enters the weekend with a 4-2-2 record. The Quakers do host unbeaten Cornell on Friday evening before Monday's matchup. Penn's only losses this season have been to #8 Clemson and Harvard. Sasha Stephsns leads the offense with five points (two goals, one assist) while Paige Lombard (two goals) and Erin Mikolai (one goal, two assists) each own four points. Three different goalkeepers have seen action this season, led by 459:33 of action from Carrie Crook, who's tallied a 0.98 GAA and .792 save percentage.
Lehigh is 1-14-1 all-time against the Quakers, garnering its only win in 1992 by a 3-2 final. In their last meeting at Penn, the Mountain Hawks earned a 1-1 tie during the 2013 season.
Following Monday's game at Penn, Lehigh will return home next Saturday (Oct. 10) to host Loyola at 7 p.m.
