BOSTON - The Lehigh men's basketball team got off to a slow start and pulled within seven late in the first half, but Boston University was clicking on all cylinders as the Mountain Hawks fell 75-56 on Saturday at Case Gym. Sophomore Tim Kempton led Lehigh with 13 points and seven rebounds while classmate Austin Price had ten points and a career-high six boards. The Mountain Hawks ended the game on a 15-0 run and scored 19 of the game's final 21 points.
"Certainly it's a frustrating situation on both ends of the court," said Lehigh head coach Brett Reed. "Our defense has to improve, it has to get better. We had some blown assignments, we failed a few times in transition. Sometimes people make shots and you've got to be able to overcome that, but I think some of our wounds were self-inflicted. The frustrating part about our offense is almost doubling down on all of our defensive inefficiencies and that's why there's a discrepancy in these games."
Freshman Tyler Jenkins had five late points to help spark the strong finish. Senior Corey Schaefer also scored six points while junior Jesse Chuku and freshman Brandon Alston had five points apiece.
The Terriers were on fire from three-point range, hitting 14-of-25 from long range (56 percent). Eric Fanning led Boston University with 21 points.
"I'm going to continue to ask this team to focus on the defensive end because I don't think we're going to score as if it's going out of style and we can't count on putting up 80 points every night," said Reed. "So our defense has to be in place and we have to correct some of the issues that are leading to our ineffectiveness. For our post players to have a combined ten turnovers, overall, we need better production and we need some more things to work their way out."
Boston University knocked down threes on their first two possessions, then Kempton pulled Lehigh within 6-2 just less than two minutes into the game.
The Terriers responded with a 13-2 run which included three straight threes, two from Hankerson and another by John Papale, to give Boston University a 19-4 lead with 11:06 on the first-half clock.
The Mountain Hawks began to catch fire, using increased defensive energy to pull within eight (23-15) following a Price three-pointer with 6:57 on the clock. The run began with a Goldsborough layup and also included two Alston free throws, a Kahron Ross jumper and two Kempton free throws.
Boston U re-opened a 13-point lead at 31-18, but the Mountain Hawks scored the next six points behind consecutive threes from Miles Simelton and Alston, to pull within seven (31-24). However, the Terriers finished the half on a 6-0 run and Lehigh's offense didn't score in the final 2:51 as the Mountain Hawks headed into halftime trailing 37-24.
The Terriers knocked down eight threes in the first half, including three each from Hankerson and Cheddi Mosely. The Mountain Hawks knocked down four treys, including two from Price, who (along with Kempton) had six points to lead Lehigh's first-half offense.
Kempton tallied four of the first six second-half points (both layups) to pull Lehigh within 39-28, forcing a Boston University timeout less than two minutes into the half.
A jumper from Kempton gave him Lehigh's first six second-half points and pulled the Mountain Hawks within 42-30 less than two minutes later.
Boston University responded with an 8-0 run to take a 50-32 lead. After a Kempton free throw, a Papale trey gave the Terriers a 53-31 advantage with 13:11 left in the second half.
From there, Boston University continued to click on all cylinders as the Terriers were 4-of-4 from three-point range over the ensuing seven minutes to help them open a 73-37 lead after a Mosely trey, his fifth of the game with just under seven minutes remaining.
Lehigh finished the game on a 19-2 run, which included the game's last 15 points. Jenkins scored five points in that span in just his second career game. Junior Devon Carter also added a layup while Schaefer scored all six of his points in that span. Earlier in the half, sophomore John Ross Glover completed a three-point play within seconds of entering the game.
The Mountain Hawks shot 35 percent from the field (19-of-55) and 36 percent from three-point range (5-of-14). The Terriers finished at 41 percent (22-of-54) and 56 percent from long distance (14-of-25). Boston University won the battle of the boards, 39-35.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Army to face the Black Knights. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
