Lehigh dominates archrival Lafayette in annual dual meet

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team won 15 of 17 events to roll to a dominant 120–61 win over Lafayette Saturday afternoon inside Rauch Fieldhouse. Four Mountain Hawks registered IC4A qualifying marks, while many others set new personal records as Lehigh claimed its second-straight indoor dual meet victory over the rival Leopards.
"We've been training really hard and I was super happy to see the kids come out here and give it all they had today," said head coach Matt Utesch. "This meet gave us some of the marks that we'll use to seed at the Patriot League Championships. They really did a great job and got it done today."
Sophomore Lucas Warning smashed the IC4A-qualifying shot put mark of 15.70 meters with an impressive 16.24 meter toss to earn first place. Senior Benjamin Beauchamp claimed first place in the weight throw with an IC4A-qualifying heave of 17.06 meters. Senior Adeolu Adesida won the high jump once again with an IC4A-qualifying jump of 2.10 meters. Senior Derek Gaul registered an IC4A-qualifying long jump with a leap of 7.02 meters that was good for second place and just a centimeter behind the first-place finisher of Lafayette.
Lehigh continued to shine in the field events as the Mountain Hawks finished first through third in the pole vault. Freshman Trevor Knowles won the event with a mark of 4.70 meters and Beau Whitman (4.55m) and Tyler John (4.40m) followed behind in second and third place. Lehigh also dominated the triple jump, led by sophomore Daniel Reichenbach in first place with a 14.32 meter leap. Junior Cody Israel (13.98m) and freshman Fritz Isaac (13.74m) took second and third, respectively.
Sophomore Christopher Del Rossi won a pair of events for the Mountain Hawks, claiming first in the 200 meter (22.63) and 400 meter (50.81) races. Lehigh swept the top spots in both events as senior Justin Mahoney (51.06) and sophomore Tom Troxell (52.04) finished second and third, respectively, in the 400 meter dash and Mahoney (23.04) took second in the 200 meter dash.
Lehigh took first through third in the 60 meter hurdles, led by Isaac who crossed the finish line in 8.68 seconds. Junior Robert Hugin (8.80) and Knowles (8.95) finished second and third, respectively. Sophomore James Clements sprinted 500 meters in 1:06.58 to take the top spot, while senior Sebastian Nicewicz followed in second with a time of 1:07.13.
Lehigh continued to roll in the 800 meter run, once again earning the top three spots. Senior Christopher Watson placed first with a time of 2:00.20, while freshmen James Smith (20:50) and Ryan Grace (2:02.00) were right behind in second and third. Seniors Stephen Keith (2:32.17) and Mitchell Biler (2:32.37) continued Lehigh's dominance on the track, taking first and second in the 1,000 meter run.
Freshman John Tolbert won the one mile run with a time of 4:20.98 and was followed closely by sophomore Ryan Cooney in second place with a mark of 4:21.24. Senior Ryan Mahalsky picked up a dominant win in the 3,000 meter race with a mark of 8:29.12, and was followed by junior Evan Ward (8:50.22) and senior Simon Voorhees (8:50.99) in second and third.
The quartet of Troxell, Clements, Nicewicz and Smith outkicked Lafayette in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:29.59. Smith, Tolbert, Grace and freshman James Chappell completed the relay sweep with a 4x800 meter victory after finishing with a time of 8:18.64.
The Mountain Hawks will split their squad next weekend between the Armory Invitational in New York City and the John Covert Classic inside Rauch Fieldhouse.
