BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a strong effort that fell just short at defending Patriot League Champion American, the Lehigh men's basketball returns home for the first of two straight games in Stabler Arena as the Mountain Hawks welcome Holy Cross on Saturday. Opening tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Lehigh lost a heartbreaker on Wednesday as a three-pointer with just 0.8 seconds remaining broke a 59-59 tie and gave American the slim victory.
Both Lehigh and Holy Cross enter Saturday with 1-4 Patriot League records, but each team has been in nearly every game. The Crusaders are coming off a heartbreaker of their own, falling to Army 72-70 in overtime.
Sophomore Tim Kempton led the Mountain Hawks' offense on Wednesday, scoring a season-high 24 points while tying a season high with 13 rebounds. He was 10-of-17 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line as he tallied his eighth double-double of the season and 14th of his career. It was also the first time he eclipsed 20 points on the season and only Lehigh's second 20-point effort of the year (sophomore Austin Price scored 24 in the season opener against Villanova). Price added 13 points against American while freshman Brandon Alston was a spark off the bench with ten points on 4-of-6 shooting. Lehigh shot 45 percent from the field as a team, but knocked down just 15 percent (2-of-13) from three-point range. American had a similar overall shooting percentage, but hit 39 percent of its threes (9-of-23) including the last-second three from Pee Wee Gardner which was the dagger.
Senior Conroy Baltimore returned from injury for his first action since the home opener, scoring two points (off an offensive rebound) to go with three rebounds in just three minutes. The Mountain Hawks led for 22:29 of the game while the Eagles led for 12:04 and the game was tied for 5:19 in an extremely tight game. Neither team led by more than six as the other team always seemed to have an answer.
Lehigh will look to turn its home fortunes around on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks are just 2-4 at home (compared to 5-5 on the road) and have struggled with slow starts before coming alive late. Holy Cross is just 1-6 on the road with the one win coming at Albany. The Crusaders' league victory came against Bucknell last Saturday.
Predicted third in the league's preseason poll, Holy Cross has struggled so far this season, entering with a 6-9 overall record and 1-4 mark in the Patriot League. The Crusaders are historically excellent at home and they've continued that trend, holding a 4-3 home mark compared to just 1-6 on the road. Preseason All-Patriot League honoree Malcolm Miller leads the team in scoring (12.2 points per game) while fellow senior Justin Burrell has tallied 10.5 points and 3.7 assists per contest. Malachi Alexander leads the Crusaders in rebounding with his 5.1 average. Lehigh's average margin this season is -1.6 (67.2 points for, 68.8 points against) while Holy Cross comes in at -2.6 (64.6 points for, 67.2 points against).
The Crusaders hold a 38-17 lead in the all-time series which includes three straight wins. The Mountain Hawks had won the previous three. Lehigh's season ended at Holy Cross last season with a hard-fought 54-48 defeat in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. The teams first met in 1976 (an 84-60 Holy Cross win) before reconvening for Patriot League play in the early 1990s.
Following Saturday's game, Lehigh remains home to host Navy on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for the Mountain Hawks' Coaches vs. Cancer Game.
