Conley announces 2013-14 Lehigh rowing awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh head rowing coach Brian Conley has announced the team's annual end-of-season awards. Seniors Katherine Menge, Kaitlyn Dennington and junior Corey Johnson were recognized for the women while seniors Alex Smith, Zach Gant and Jake Rita received awards for the men's squad.

All six individuals rowed in their respective Varsity Eight boats this past season.

Menge earned Athlete of the Year honors, Johnson garnered Scholar-Athlete honors and Dennington received the Coaches Award, presented to the individual who made significant contributions to the well-being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement or special leadership. Both Menge and Dennington will be joining the Lehigh rowing coaching staff next season while Johnson was an Academic All-Patriot League honoree for a second straight year and has been named team captain for next season.

For the men, Smith was named Athlete of the Year, Rita earned Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Gant received the Coaches Award. Smith and Gant were team captains this past season while Rita has been named a captain for 2014-15.

The Women's Varsity Eight finished second in the Petite Finals of the Patriot League Championships, one week after advancing to the semifinals of the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. Meanwhile, the Men's Varsity Eight advanced to the Petite Finals at Dad Vails. Both Women's and Men's Varsity Eights also defeated Lafayette to capture the River Cup.
