PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh rowing team put forth a strong effort at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on Friday, led by the Men's and Women's Varsity Eights and Men's Freshmen Eight who all advanced to Saturday's Semifinals.
"It was a good day," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "While we always wish we had everybody in the semifinals and moving on, we had some really good showings from our big boats, which is always good. It's the first time we've had both varsity eights in the semifinals in a long time."
The Women's Varsity Eight finished third in its morning heat, coming in at 6:43.93 only behind Drexel and Temple. The Men's Varsity Eight came in second with a time of 5:57.09, only behind Cincinnati while coming ahead of Army, Middlebury, UMass-Lowell and Penn State. The Men's Freshmen Eight placed second (6:15.18) behind only Michigan while beating William & Mary and Binghamton.
"The biggest challenge for the entire team today was the lane assignments that we were given in most of the races," said Conley. "We were in the outer lanes for most of the competitions, but the boats stepped up to race their best races. Some of the boats were able to move on and some came up a little short."
Saturday's semifinal schedule includes Lehigh's Men's Freshmen Eight at 8:15 a.m., Women's Varsity Eight at 10:10 and Men's Varsity Eight at 10:25. All races will take place on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The finals will begin at 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
