Avery finishes standout freshman campaign at NCAA East Regional

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lehigh women's track and field freshman Courtney Avery wrapped up her impressive rookie campaign Friday at the NCAA East Regional at North Florida's Hodges Stadium. For the first time in her collegiate career, Avery wasn't able to register a good jump and finished the competition with a no height.
"It's very unfortunate that it ended this way, but she is a superstar and I believe she will be back with a vengeance," said head coach Matt Utesch. "I told Courtney that she won all year long and now she got a taste of what it was like to be at a meet and not perform well. I told her store that feeling away deep inside and remember what it felt like when she needs a little motivation."
"This experience is totally invaluable for her," continued Utesch. "She has three more years to make it back here and I know she'll succeed at this level in the future."
Avery put together a fantastic rookie campaign throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. She won the high jump at the indoor Patriot League Championship, while also setting a new meet record en route to being named Rookie of the Meet. The Wynantskill, N.Y. native earned a record-tying three Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards during the indoor season.
During the outdoor season, Avery won the high jump at the prestigious Penn Relays while setting a new Lehigh record. She bested that record a week later with a 1.76m leap at the Patriot League Championship to earn second place and be named second team All-Patriot League.
Avery finishes her freshman campaign as a two-time All-East athlete, six-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week and the Lehigh record holder in both the indoor and outdoor high jump.
Two other Mountain Hawks will compete in the NCAA East Regional Saturday for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. June 11-14.
