WALNUT, Calif. – Lehigh women's track and field senior Brooke Astor set a new Lehigh heptathlon record Thursday at the Mt. SAC relays, a meet that is widely regarded as one of the nation's largest and most prestigious outdoor competitions. The competition pitted her against some of the country's most elite multi-event athletes.
"It was very nerve wracking competing against Olympians and really elite athletes," said Astor. "I was able to settle into my groove and really go from there. It was such a surreal experience."
Astor recorded a total of 5,324 points, besting her own previous school record of 5,083 that was set earlier this season at the Winthrop Invitational. The Milltown, N.J. native set new personal records in two of the seven events to cruise to the impressive total of 5,324 points.
"We sent her to this meet because it would be her best chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships," said head coach Matt Utesch. "It was her opportunity to focus on her event and get to the point where she can be top 24 in the country. She obviously did a fantastic job, and my guess is that right now she's in the top 15."
Astor threw the shot put an impressive 11.47m, besting her previous record of 11.28m. She finished the 200 meter dash in 22.50 seconds, over two seconds faster than her previous best. The senior ran 800 meters in 2:22.12 and completed the 100 meter hurdles in 14.45 seconds before recording marks of 1.60m in the high jump, 5.71m in the long jump and 39.01m in the javelin throw.
"I didn't have the exact meet that I wanted to, especially my first two events," said Astor. "But it gives me a lot of confidence knowing that even though it didn't go exactly as planned, I was able to come back and perform well for the rest of the meet."
The rest of the Mountain Hawk squad will compete at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational and Moravian's Greyhound Invite this weekend.
