The Mountain Hawks are eying their 10th win of the season, looking to reach double-figure victories for a third straight season. Last time out, Lehigh lost a 10-9 double overtime final to the Tigers of Princeton. Just seconds from pulling out a 9-8 regulation victory, Princeton evened the score with 2.7 seconds left in regulation before winning it in a second overtime. It marked Lehigh's second multiple overtime game of the season, to go with a thrilling 7-6 triple overtime victory over #20 Villanova in February. The last time Lehigh had more than one multiple overtime game in a single season was 1985 when the squad went to two overtimes against Lafayette and three vs. Salisbury State.
Junior Dan Taylor led the offense on Tuesday, tying his career high with five goals. He scored Lehigh's first four goals and four of its first five. Four other Mountain Hawks had a single goal. Lehigh continued its third-quarter success, erasing a one-goal halftime deficit by scoring three of the first four goals. In the end, the Mountain Hawks outscored the Tigers 4-3 in that stanza to even the score after 45 minutes of play. Two of the goals came in unsettled, transition situations as junior Alan Henderson turned a scramble off a faceoff into a groundball and dish to classmate Dylan O'Shaughnessy who scored his fifth goal of the season. Later in the quarter, a Matt Poillon save led to a transition goal as senior Matt Smith found sophomore Reid Weber to make it 6-5 Lehigh. Lehigh has now outscored its opponents 46-17 in the third quarter, by far the team's best quarter this season.
The Mountain Hawks defense held one of the nation's most potent offenses to nine regulation goals. Despite 52 shots for the game, Lehigh limited Princeton's quality scoring chances.
Tuesday's effort came against a perennial lacrosse power in Princeton who has advanced to 20 NCAA Tournaments and won six NCAA National Championships. Lehigh will now focus its attention to its final nonleague game of the season in Georgetown. The Mountain Hawks' third Big East opponent on the schedule (along with Marquette and Villanova), the Hoyas are 4-7 but have some slim losses against teams currently in the national rankings, falling to #1 Loyola (10-9), #14/16 Hofstra (9-8 in overtime) and #19 Towson (8-7).
Georgetown's wins have come against Mount St. Mary's, Navy, Furman and Providence. Peter Conley leads the offense with 32 points behind 21 goals and 11 assists. Bo Stafford (10 goals, 15 assists) and Reilly O'Connor (13 goals, 10 assists) have also eclipsed 20 points while four others are in double figures. Tyler Knarr has been dominant at the faceoff X, winning 64.1 percent of his draws (157-of-257) while scooping an eye-popping 118 groundballs. John Urbank leads the defense with 18 caused turnovers (to go with 19 groundballs) while Bryson Greene has 23 groundballs and 13 caused turnovers. Jake Haley has started all 11 games in goal, owning a 10.50 GAA and 48.7 save percentage.
Georgetown leads the all-time series with Lehigh, 3-1. The teams met for four consecutive years from 1995-98 with the Hoyas winning the first two before an 11-10 Lehigh victory in 1997. The Hoyas responded with a 14-8 win in 1998.
The Mountain Hawks wrap up the regular season next Friday night (Apr. 18) when they head to Lafayette to face the archrival Leopards at 7 p.m.
