BOSTON – Lehigh women's track and field senior Brooke Astor became the ECAC pentathlon champion Friday evening as she set a new school record with 3774 points. The meet pinned Astor against the best Division I athletes from the northeast and the senior was able to claim first place and be named All-East.
"It's such a great accomplishment and an especially good way to finish out my senior indoor season," said Astor. "A few years ago I would have never thought this was possible. I've just continued to work hard and improve and this is a great result."
Astor's 3774 points broke an 11-year old Lehigh record of 3739 that was set by former Mountain Hawk standout Justina Barone in 2003. Astor improved on her previous personal-best mark (3578) by nearly 200 points.
"She is such a great athlete and this win really shows that she is Lehigh Hall of Fame caliber athlete," said head coach Matt Utesch. "Just when you think she can't get any better, Brooke will always go further and it's amazing."
Astor started the five-event competition with a first-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles, clocking in at a time of 8.93 seconds. She finished third in the high jump (1.60m) and sixth in the shot put (10.65m) before taking second in the long jump with a personal record-tying mark of 5.58m. She was able to pull ahead to claim the pentathlon title in the 800 meter race by setting a new personal record with a blistering pace of 2:20.40.
"The most impressive thing about Brooke's win is that she did it in the hardest way possible," said Utesch. "The 800 is such a hard event, especially because it comes last, and she had so much heart and desire and was able to push through to the victory."
"This helped me gain a lot more confidence heading into the outdoor season," said Astor. "Now I'll be much more confident running the 800 and hope to continue to get great results in the spring."
