BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a tough loss to Loyola last week, the #16 Lehigh men's lacrosse team heads to Bucknell on Saturday for a rematch of the 2013 Patriot League Championship Game. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. in Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Mountain Hawks have won three in a row against the Bison after Bucknell won six straight from 2007 through 2011.
Â
Lehigh and Loyola stood tied at three after one quarter last weekend. Junior Patrick Corbett gave the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead then after three straight Greyhounds goals, sophomore Kurtis Kaunas scored a nifty transition goal then sophomore Alex Eaton added an unassisted tally to tie the score at three. Loyola held a 4-0 edge in the second quarter to take a 7-3 lead, then sophomore Reid Weber pulled the Mountain Hawks within 7-4. However, the Greyhounds scored the next four for an 11-4 advantage after three quarters. The Mountain Hawks scored two straight and three of the next four, but couldn't pull any closer than five.
Â
The loss snapped several impressive streaks: six-game home winning streak, nine-game regular season winning streak and 13-game winning streak against Patriot League foes. Lehigh's last league loss was at Colgate in 2012. Junior Matt Poillon made 11 saves between the pipes while four different Mountain Hawks posted two caused turnovers. Junior Sam Lawrence set a career high with two while posting his first-career point, an assist on Weber's third-quarter transition goal. Sophomore Billy Oppenheimer scored his first goal in a Lehigh uniform in the fourth quarter.
Â
Weber leads the team with 13 points while Corbett owns a team-leading 11 goals. Lehigh's close defense of senior Ty Souders, senior Lukas Mikelinich and sophomore Tripp Telesco have combined for 41 groundballs and 21 caused turnovers led by 17 groundballs and 12 caused turnovers from Telesco. Telesco has 13 groundballs and 11 caused turnovers over his last three games.
Â
The Mountain Hawks look to improve to 5-1 after six games for the second time in the last three seasons. Every Patriot League game proves large as the top two seeds earn a bye into the Patriot League Semifinals while the #3 through 6 teams have to play an opening round game. The last time Lehigh and Bucknell met, the Mountain Hawks earned an impressive 11-5 win in the 2013 Patriot League Championship Game. Lehigh picked up a hard-fought 11-7 in the regular season last year at Christy Mathewson Stadium.
Â
Bucknell is 2-2 so far this season, owning wins over Delaware (6-4) and Navy (9-6) while falling to Bryant (12-9) and Colgate (9-8). The Bison are led by Sean Doyle who has 11 points behind seven goals and four assists. Todd Heritage owns seven points (six goals, one assist), as does David Dickson (three goals, four assists). Thomas Flibotte is tied for second on the team with six goals. Jackson Place leads the defense with eight groundballs and a team-leading 10 caused turnovers. Sam Grinberg has played every minute in goal, owning a 7.75 GAA and 54.4 save percentage. The Bison have struggled at the faceoff X, winning just 36.5 percent (27-of-74).
Â
Bucknell leads the all-time series, 33-13, but the Mountain Hawks have won three straight to gain momentum. The Bison had won six straight until a 9-8 Lehigh victory on Apr. 4, 2012 as Dante Fantoni broke an 8-8 tie in the final seconds. That gave the Mountain Hawks their first win over Bucknell since Apr. 1, 2006. Lehigh followed by earning a hard-fought 11-7 road win last April to clinch the regular season championship then followed with a dominant Patriot League Championship victory. The first-ever meeting came in 1969, a 14-1 loss before Lehigh's first win in 1971 by a 7-6 final.
Â
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks head to Yale on Tuesday for a big nonleague matchup against the #10 Bulldogs. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
