
Lehigh travels to top-seeded Navy for quarterfinals Thursday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The No. 8 seed Lehigh women's basketball team looks to shock top-seeded and three-time defending champion Navy in the Patriot League Quarterfinals Thursday in Annapolis. Should the Mountain Hawks upset the Mids, head coach Sue Troyan would claim her 300th career win. The game can be viewed for free on the Patriot League Network with audio coverage on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM in the Lehigh Valley.

Lehigh held of Colgate Tuesday night in the tournament's opening round to earn the spot in Thursday's contest. The Mountain Hawks started the second half on a 28-9 run and held off the No. 9 Raiders down the stretch to capture a 59-49 victory.

Junior Sarah Williams finished the game with a career high-tying 16 points, while junior Katie O'Reilly also chipped in 16, seven of which came from the free throw line. O'Reilly also pulled down a season-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Kerry Kinek was limited to three points, but grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Mountain Hawks shot 4-for-7 from downtown in the second half after going 0-for-5 in the first half. The Raiders finished just 8.7 percent (2-for-23) from three-point range. Lehigh finished the game shooting 38 percent (19-for-50) from the floor, highlighted by a 55 percent (11-for-20) showing in the second half. Lehigh went 17-for-27 from the charity stripe.

The Mids won the league's regular season championship, the first outright league regular season title in program history, after compiling a league record of 15-3. Navy head coach Stephanie Pemper was awarded Patriot League Coach of the Year honors, while senior Alix Membreno earned the Defensive Player of the Year award and classmates Kara Pollinger and Jade Geif were named first team All-Patriot League.

Geif, Membreno, Pollinger and fellow senior Audrey Bauer have all scored over 1,000 points during their careers in Annapolis. Initial research done by Navy has turned up only three other instances in NCAA Division I women's basketball history in which a single class at a school produced four players with 1,000 career points.

The Mids captured a dominant 74-50 win at Loyola to close out the regular season Saturday. Prior to that, Navy suffered a 63-50 loss to American in the nation's capital on Feb. 26. It was the Mids' largest margin of defeat during league play, as Navy's only other two losses came against Army (54-48) and Lafayette (70-69).

Navy claimed a pair of double-digit victories over the Mountain Hawks this season. The two teams have met twice before in the tournament, with the most recent meeting being Navy's 64-59 semifinal win over Lehigh in 2012. The winner of Thursday's game will have a one-game advantage in the all-time series as it's currently tied at 26.

Navy used strong three-point shooting and several large runs to capture at 79-59 win over Lehigh on Feb. 19 in Annapolis, Md. Lehigh finished the game shooting 34.4 percent (22-for-64) from the field and 25 percent (4-for-16) from three-point range. The Mids shot 50.8 percent (30-for-59) from the floor and 48 percent (12-for-25) from downtown, highlighted by a 9-for-14 effort from beyond the arc in the first half.

Freshman Lexi Martins led Lehigh with a career-high 13 points and also pulled down seven rebounds. Sophomores Kerry Kinek and Elizabeth Sharlow each tallied 11 points, while classmate Amina Affini notched ten. Freshman Kiernan McCloskey chipped in six points and seven rebounds. Five Mids scored in double digits, led by Kara Pollinger with 18. Pollinger shot 4-for-7 from downtown and 7-for-10 from the field.
